i am so confused. i don't know if i'm any good at guitar, and i don't know if i can improve. like i can play kinda hard stuff, acoustic layla solo and can strum two step mad fast and shit but then again i'm playing like good riddance and grey street a lot. plus, i don't know how i can get better since i get to bored with scales or fingering/strumming excersices. any help?
I can't believe that we would lie in our graves,
dreaming of things we might have been.

i know what it's like...i've been in a rut of not knowing what my next step should be. i'm playing the same stuff over and over, and it's getting old. theory got boring after a while, so what i'm doing now is just working on my ear. recording some notes and seeing if i can mimic them...trying to figure out basic songs, etc.

I think that everyone has the ability to improve unless for some tragic accident like you were feeding your pet killer whale and it bit your arm off. Like QuattroDore said things happen to me in plateaus. I couldn't play satellite after weeks of trying, and the next nite, I had the whole thing down. Now I am venturing into theory. It has taught me how much farther I have to go. It has also helped me pick out songs by ear really well. If you like guitar keep at it as a hobby. If you don't who can make you?

This happens to anyone, whether it is in any instrument, or anything related to learning. We do not learn based on a linear relationship, we learn on plateaus, we go through different stages ... learning guitar is by no means a consistent thing, nor is learning anything, for that matter. YOu make improvements slowly over time, but if you play consistently, you can make improvements quicker. As you start, you generally make quicker advances in your playing, whiel the longer you have been playing for, it is generally harder and harder to increase your playing ability. Everyone learns in plateaus, thats what exactly is so hard about learning anything, especially a musical instrument. I'm sure anyone on this board has encountered the huge frustration of not getting consistently better over time. The key is to stick with it and practice every day, you will see those improvements gradually over time. The only thing I can tell anyone who wants to get better, however, is to practice finger excercises. Those finger excercises are what, in my opinion, sepearte the people wwho are casually interested in guitar with those who are serious about guitar.QuattroDore wrote:I've always improved in plateaus. I'll stay at the same level for awhile, then out of nowhere, for seemingly no reason other than practicing, my level will increase quite a bit.
Good luck.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking. Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away. Forget about the guilty, we are innocent instead, for soon we shall all find our lives swept away.
this was my first reaction. it helps to have someone to push you, to make you take the next step. like where would john be without paul and vice versa. of course you don't need to be a veritable god of rock to reap the benefits of jamming.crash_in_to_me wrote:jam with someone
i've come up with a bunch of crazy riffs while jamming over simple chords with my buddies. and you never know what you might say when making up lyrics on the spot.
when i write songs it usually starts with a riff. or a couple of riffs (for the different parts) then i add some lyrics. anything will work, i don't really care how profound or "good" they are. but i wait patiently and i'll find myself with a thought and a new lyric that is just perfect and then i write the rest of the song around that one or two lines that just kinda "come to me"
i think it was Bono who said, "We can take credit for the good songs, but the great songs come from 'Somewhere Else.'"
