well what do you want to know about harmonies? like how to write a harmony for a given melody? or how to harmonize a melody? ie give chords that could be played over a melody. like how they take old church hymns and revamp them with chords for guitar.

i'm not really sure how to write a harmony for guitar but i regularly sing a lower harmony and that, i usually just do by staying low (in tone) and singing by ear. i am in the tenor/bass range. my guess is usually you can harmonize by playing different octave or by playing a fifth/fourth above or below the melody. or maybe it is 4or5 scale tones above or below the melody.

as far as harmonizing a melody, you basically take a time signature and place chords on the strong beats. in 4/4 that would be 2 and 4 and in 3/4 that would be 1 and 3 etc. this is good for if you have a really cool riff, maybe it would be cooler to go to a chord for a beat. like how "the stone" has the riff and then hits that Gm chord for a beat. that is straight harmonizing. i've actually written a short Gm riff to play off the main riff for that part when i play along with friends. Harmonizing is rad.

now to write the chords you have to find the all the notes in the given time frame and find a chord that best encompasses the notes. this usually means ignoring passing tones and looking for triads and 7th chords.

hope this starts you along, but if you could be more specific about what you want to do with harmony that would make responding a lot easier (and shorter)

grock is a smart man.

im really wondering about how to sing/play back up to other vocal/guitar parts. ive always just thought it was singing an octave up but thats not really the case ive found. is there a rule of thumb for choosing the note to sing when singing harmony? i throw the term harmonies around and i prolly dont even know the full extent of the word. ill do some reading on it later i spose.

is it the fourth or fifth above the note being played/sang? maybe thats what im lookin for.

And a minor 3rd. You can pretty much create a harmony whichever way you like. Go to this link and check out the different intervals you can use to create harmony.

He is not any worse than any other poster here, and the people who claim he is just don't know what they're talking about. The demonization has gotten ridiculously out of hand.
