A year

Unread post by fallon222 » Sun Dec 07, 2003 6:58 am

Hey everyone...
I am new here, being playing with my taylor for about a year. I took lessons for a month, learned some scales (major, minor pent. an blues), 12 bar blues, bar chords and some theory. I have yet to learn a song from start to finish, probably beacuse I start on one and get bored with it before I learn the whole thing. I was curious if everyone learns one song at a time or tries multiples ones at once? One of my goals is to be able to play and sing at the same time any suggestions on that as well? I should note that I may be tone deaf, however, it does seem to be getting better, and I have two left feet when it comes to soul.

most of the time i try and learn multiple songs at the same time. this way if i get bored or frustrated with one of them, i can just go to another one. as for singing and playing at the same time all the advice i can give you is practice. hope this helps.

I learn multiple songs at once , its like you said so yourself , you can get bored just working with one single song at a time , what i do , is sit down and listen to some acoustic shows , when its a Dave song its really helpful to listen to the acoustic shows , anyway when i first started learning Dave songs , i had 10 different songs going on at once , maybe even more , i simply get bored dazing around in one single song as well so i try to add as many songs at the same time , play a little of this and a little of that for a couple days , then when im in the mood i sit down and play all the way through a show , now some people might tell you to learn a single song at a time to be able to play all the way through it , but it all depends on who you are and how good you are with a guitar in the first place , maybe its some kinda feeling for it or something i duno but it works fine for me :)

Play like everything you hear. Try to figure out even the most mundane melodies you hear, like on TV or something. Try to play stuff that isnt written for guitar. I like to find the chords for Ben Folds Five songs (piano stuff, if you dont know) and play those songs.

seems like you're doing just fine. just keep playing, man. what ever you like to play or hear. The way I've learned in the past is by getting hooked on a song, like Crush or Rhyme and Reason which were a couple of the first Dave songs I learned. I just couldn't stop practicing them once I started to learn them. I usually like to learn one song at a time which doesn't mean mastering one song at a time. At leat work on one song, get the chords down and the timing and stuff, and then practice from there. the ear comes with time and so does the soul. if it's in you, it will eventually come out.

peace
good, and you?

well, right now, aftera year, you know more technicle aspect about guitar than I have known in 4 years of playing, lol. I just play by ear, I don't know pretty much that much at all about theory. So, keep it up, and you will be an einstein to me about the technicle aspects.
Yes, I am in a box

sometimes I wonder if starting off right away learning theory hurt my creative side. I know I am making progress, sometimes it seems the train just isn't moving fast enough...

Its never a bad thing to learn theory , but it ain't critical either , its a matter of choice i guess , if you can manage theory , then i think you should go for it , learn how music really works , theory won't teach you how to play , only how things are connected

I am having such a problem playing songs I wonder sometimes if I was meant to play? Meaning I have a low self esteem in regards to my ability...

I wonder if I wadted the last year playing scales, I can rip through them, but then again they are not musical if not appled along with a song. I think you hit the nail on the head, practice. I need to just realize my goal and work towards it...
