Gig on Saturday - Help Me Find Some Songs to Play!!!

Unread post by ElGuitarrista » Tue Nov 18, 2003 11:33 pm

So I have my first gig on Saturday at a local coffee house. Actually, I'm sharing the time with a more established local singer/songwriter. She said I can play as much or as little as I want.

So, my goal is to have 4 or 5 songs that I can play between her songs. I started writing songs a little bit ago, and I have 2 originals that I will play.

Also, I really like Ben Harper's "Waiting on an Angel". I'm going to play that as a third sond.

Help me find 2 more songs! I could really use some suggestions. Some friends from school are coming... and I really don't want to only play 3 songs.

The problem is, I have a pretty deep voice. The vocals in DMB songs are a stretch, and I'd rather avoid them. In fact, most popular songs are too high for me. I like singing "Waiting on an Angel" because it's nice and low. I'll have two guitars there... one in standard, and one dropped one whole step.

Can you all please give me some suggestions? I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,
ElGuitarrista

how about Johnny Cash's versions of Hurt...it looks fairly easy to play and he has a very deep voice.

Try David Gray's Debauchery:

This is a great solo acoustic song, with fairly low vocals. It comes from his first album -- A Century Ends.

The song is really simple musically, but can be made to sound very nice with some little hammer-ons/fills here and there.

congrats on your first gig man. i would suggest Incubus' "Just a Phase" it has low vocals and sounds really sweet, i believe cavecriket posted a cover of it a looooong time ago. I think it sounds real good acoustic too

why kinda stuff do you sing regularly?

you could do a nice pearl jam cover. black etc.
always good to bring some old school. people love it when they recognize songs. makes 'em feel all warm and fuzzy.

If you aren't playing w/ a band you could probably just tune down to accompany your voice for DMB songs, I'm not sure though.
