Using a Capo for alternate tunings.

Unread post by vipergts281 » Sun Nov 09, 2003 9:21 pm

Sorry if this topic has been covered before......

I was looking to learn some new songs, but I found out 99% of the ones I looked up where not in standard tuning. Dashboard Confessional is a great example of this. I don't want to tune my strings differently, so is there a way I can use a capo so my guitar sounds like alt. tunings? Example......Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb or Db Ab Db Ab Db Db If I can use a capo, at which fret do I put it on?

Thanks for all input. And again, I apologize if this has been covered already.

no capo, unless you want it on fret 11. you just have to tune yourself down a half step for the first one, and the other one needs a bit of messing around.

the first tuning you listed is pretty common in the recording industry; a lot of bands use it. DMB uses it on the Last Stop, but other bands, say the Smashing Pumpkins, use it on practically every song. but, anything that is in EbAbDbGbBbEb, you can play in standard and it will be ok, unless you are playing along with the CD of course.

standard tuning is is tuned E A D G B E
what you are saying is Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb

that would require going "down" in tuning...a capo will raise your tuning, so it won't help you there...

you could probably get away with using barre chords to compensate:
i.e. Am in a half step down tuning would be 455444 as opposed to 577555...with "emo" songs, they usualy don't realy on anything but first position chords that could easily be played as barre chords...you get what I am saying?

That is the only simple solution if you want to play them...

good luck ;)

Thanks guys.

I actually have a tuner for my guitar. But I tried using that one time and I still couldn't get it right. I don't know that much about guitars, so I guess thats why I couldn't figure it out even with the tuner. Maybe I'll go mess around with that again. Thanks again.

and another thing, depending on what key the song is in, you can use a capo and play in a different key relative to the capo but playing in the same key as the song.

for example, if the tuning on the song is Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb and the song uses basic chords and they're playing in the key of Eb, then you slap your capo on the 3rd fret of your standard tuned guitar and play the song in C relative to the capo, but you're actually playing in Eb. its reallly good practice and also sounds cool to play different forms of the same chords along with the album, or if your jamming with someone who has it tuned down a half step. in other words, you can play in any key in standard tuning (the capo helps out a lot)

it would probably be better to throw away all of your Dashboard Confessinal CD's.

it probably takes less than five minutes to retune a guitar using this.

This is a late post i know , but i just thought i would put an example in here , also im very tired right now so if someone have already mentioned this , im sorry ;)

What i find easy when tuning to Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb , is to put the capo on fret 1 and tune to normal , then when you're done , remove the capo and you are in Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb

Hope this helps

I do know that! and I also do know that the Danish people learn german in school and normally use to catch it up pretty good as the Dutch do as well...

The german part next to Danmark is called Schlesswig-Hohlstein I think... right?
