Yeah, I do it a lot too, I don't think its bad. I actually started using my thumb to fret the low E after I noticed that I had a tendency to bring my thumb over the top of the neck.blaze wrote:I just realized I kinda wrap my thumb around the neck rather then the classical style. If you play DMB stuff, your other fingers will stretch out and then you can use the thumb technique to play other artists' songs. Some good songs to practice thumbing the low E are: Remember (Hendrix), Come Back to Bed (Mayer), and Amen Omen (Harper). Amen Omen especially sounds cool when you use your thumb to fret the low E just because you can hammer on and off of the E for the verse and you can use the thumb througout the chorus........

Yea, i actually learned how to play barre chords that way cause that's the way that Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins plays his barre chords. I like it, and i still use that style all the time.
Anybody here love the Smashing Pumpkins?

you definitely have a lot more mobility if you keep your thumb planted behind the neck and play on your fingertips, however, there are times where it's really necessary to let your thumb goes where it wants to go, but it shouldn't become habitual.

I play with my thumb all the time.. I don't see any reason to not/i] use it. anything that requires distance stretchs or fast fingering on the lower strings, then I'll drop it back behind for the added limberness gained with the rest of the fingers.. but as far as wall I will use my thumb for.. any relatively prolonged holds on the E or A.. I don't have huge hands, but I can get around on all the "huge hand" john mayer stuff (sometimes stretching to capacity, but still getting it)
Using your thumb seems like a "sloppy" way to play guitar.. but there are 5 fingers on a hand, if you aren't using them all, you ain't using them to capacity. With that said, don't get too used to doing things any one way.. flexibility is key.. something like 5x555x can be played with lots of different fingers, and each makes different notes and patterns more accessable
