Ok so i would love to be able to jam(solo) on some of dave songs along with my brother. Can we perhaps for my help and others list a few songs and maybe tab out a scale to work off and use. This would be much appreciated. Maybe start with something that can be used in the LIOG jam, or any song u guys want to do. Please help!! :-D

But go to a book store and buy the Live from Luther College songbook
it has the sheet music/tabs with both Dave and Tim stuff in it

ok, so i know exactly how you feel. the whole reason i took up playing guitar was to play LIOG. i absolutley love the song. i can tell you some of the stuff that i do, it's a bit personalized by me, but it sounds great. first off, on the long jam where it goes 10-11, 9-9, 7-7, etc, i found two things that can really spice it up. 1) pick the D string on the same fret that you play on the G string ( ha ha, no pun intednded), for example, strum the 10-11 chord, then pluck pluck the 10 on E, then the 11 on G, then the 11 on the D, and so on for every chord. its hard to explain the beat, but just improvise what you think sounds good. then, my favorite, is to add a slap to the strings. play the chord, then kinda slap mute it (like in pay for what you get) the pluck the two notes on E and G, and then slap mute it again, then continue on to the next chord. but when you get to the 3-4, and 5-6 ones, DON'T strum them, pick each of the two notes seperatly, and it will make for a great sound.
2) just a little thing, but on the first jam, play EDED chords instead of 3-5, 5-7, 3-5. it just makes a bit more full of a sound if you're playing solo.
one more thing, if you listen to the version of LIOG on Crash, the part on the electric you can also play on acoustic, it is pretty easy to do, its all on the A string, and just listen to the song and you should be able to pick it up.

The songs in B minor / D major

so that's a start

you can use the bminor pentatonic
(here's root position)
E - 7 - - 10
A - 7 - 9
D - 7 - 9
G - 7 - 9
B - 7 - - 10
E - 7 - - 10

also, if you want to stay on that same part of the neck but play major as opposed to minor you can just fill in the major chords for the D scale

i mean, honestly, pentatonic scales are hte easiest to jam with.
if you don't know other positinos let me nkow, but I find that this one generally sounds pretty good with LIOG.

I'll be honest, I don't jam to dave very much (just starting to.. been a huge fan of DMB for like 5 years but have always focused more on soloing/leads than rhythm so i haven't bothered to learn much dave until recently)... but this is one that I actually have jammed to...

one question i know penatonic scale but i never know where i can do it so i can do a 7-10 one for liog lets say i want to go higher but stay in the same key for the song...what other postions could i use? thanks for the help

seventh fret is a "B," 10th fret is a "D" (sorry i wrote that so damn late so it may not be totally clear).

from here you can move up to the next position

... the starting frets are the same "ending" frets from the previous position

so you're starting

E - 10th fret
A - 9th
D - 9th
G - 9th
B - 10th
E - 10th

the following frets are as follows..

E - 10 - 12
A - 9 - - 12
D - 9 - - 12
G - 9 - 11
B - 10 - 12
E - 10 - 12

currently fuming because i can't get my hands on a copy of P & P, (although, luckily I saw the doc. about a year and a half ago...)

it's a nice look into ben's music, life, etc..

if you're a harper fan, definitely watch it... very well done....

G - 6 7**-9 (MOVE YOUR HAND ONE FRET OVER)
B - 7 8-10 (SHIFT HAND BACK)
E - 7* 9-10**

E - 9 10**-12
A - 9 10-12
D - 9*-11 12**
G - 9-11 12
B - 10-12*
E - 9 10**-12

*'s indiacte B's and ** D's (you'll want to use as like starting/ending points generally)

the second position is the "E major" chord shape (so a major barre chord on the 10th fret)

yeah man i got p&p the day it came out man is really cool. ben gets very serious at couple spots in it but if you really listen to what he is saying he has a right to say them not going to say what they are but you will see heh.

i know you probably dont wanna hear this, but the best thing in my opinion would be to put on a recording of LIOG and just play around with it.... you'll know what sounds good and what doesnt, and then what sounds good will stick in your head, so that the next time u play it, u know where to start... this is also a good way to come up with a particular style of playing that suits you
