Help me help myself...with some theory

Unread post by chosta » Mon Oct 20, 2003 2:05 pm

Ok - i've been looking at looknohands.com, trying to teach myself some scales. I guess i'm just looking for some tips/advice on how to read a site like that? im starting right with what it gives me - a c major scale. i know we got 7 notes and all that jazz, and just about everything on there is an octave of something, but how should i go about like....building the scales? is there one like common place to start? because it seems i can pick any random note and build it off from there. so i'm not really sure what to look for....if that makes any sense? but anyway, any help would be appriceated, thanks

my first advice is to do a search. we have had a number of theory threads around here with tons of good advice.

with that said, the site you are using, is best looked at and broken into 3 fret patterns. Practice that pattern memorizing where the root note is and what kind of scale (major/minor/pentatonic...). Then you can move the pattern and as long as set your root right you'll be in the key.

does that help some. also memorizing keys is good. like the key of C is easy. it's just CDEFGABC. now move everything up 2 frets and you are in D. and what are those notes... DEF#GABC#D. i am able to just bust out my scales just like that, like A is ABC#DEF#G#A. F is FGABbCDEF. Dminor (the saddest key of them all) is DEFGABbCD etc...

my biggest advice is to memorize your fretboard. i know it doesn't seem like it's much fun but it pays off huge in the long run. with a memorized fretboard and memorized keys you can locate your key quickly, solo effortlessly and teach yourself theory by being able to see the notes on the board and not just playing some monotonous patterns all the time. in other words you see when you can add a flat 7 or modulate your solo to play against the rhythm key or whatever.
