Technique
Alright after 7 montyhs of being self-taught I decide I'm going to take lessons and learn scales and theory and all that good stuff to improv solos and learn different techniques and just expand my mind as a guitarist in general. So for all the people who are just starting to play and are being seiftaught this is for you. I go in and apparently my hand bounces when I pick single notes which is common for people who dont kn ow any better. Don't use your arm to pick strings use your wrist. Also,I was holding the pick wrong. I held it on an angle when in reality you're suppose to hold it straight down to get a clear sharper tone. Also, I was strumming over the sound hole when you're suppose to strum mopre closer to the bridge than directly over the sound hole. Like partially over the sound hole and partially inbetween the bridge and the sound hole. I guess thats it I'll give you beginners more tips and maybe a few of you that are self taught and need to improve soime tips on my next lesson.

I'm self-taught. But I haven't really had a problem with any of those things.HendrixWS wrote:Alright after 7 montyhs of being self-taught I decide I'm going to take lessons and learn scales and theory and all that good stuff to improv solos and learn different techniques and just expand my mind as a guitarist in general. When I have some time, I'll probably go to a teacher, to learn scales/theory and all of that blah

Why does everyone think you need lessons to learn theory and scales. Take a theory class, or pick up a book. I have been playing for 3 years, never taken a lesson, completely self taught, and I know that I've come a long way in those three years. I know theory, Know tons of scales. It may be because i play other instruments too, but I don't think that lessons are really necessary unless you want to advance farther into the real technical aspects of guitar. Faster fingers, reading sheet music, stuff like that, that is a little harder to self teach.

exactly right. i have never had a lesson. i took a theory 1 class and most of it i had learned by myself in the first year of playing guitar. now i know my scales and can transfer them to the guitar fairly well. i still have problems remembering what note is what, because i tend to play by feel and just slide notes that sound off or whatever. but lessons can give good technique for like speed and accuracy. maybe some tips on how to practice and stuff but really practice will bring you much further than lessons.DreaminBassMunky wrote:Why does everyone think you need lessons to learn theory and scales. and practice with a purpose. turn off the TV and actually practice the guitar. try to figure out scales. everyone knows the song "Doh a deer" and try and pick out siple melodies and you'll be well on your way.

Some people have a hard time learning on their own.
Anyhow, My G-ma said she would pay for my guitar teach if I took lessons. Badass!
