question about pickups

ive never used a pickup ...but if i get a new acoustic guitar w/o electronics i was thinking about putting a pickup in it....but im not sure how they really work.

ive seen some that sit across the hole with no wires/cables coming from it...but how does it get plugged into the amp/speaker? the only pickup that ive played with was a cheap on that had the wire coming out of the hole into the amp.

either you didn't see the cables or the cables went through the guitar to a jack at the endpin.

your best bet is to get a under saddle pickup. those passive, magnetic pickups sound really electric. Fishman makes a number of excellent models that can fit nearly any budget.
