Singing and playing .. READ !

Unread post by cgalves » Fri Oct 10, 2003 10:25 am

Ok, so I've been jamming to a lot of acoustic hardcore punk lately with my buddy Daniel who has been playing a hell of a lot longer than me (about 7 years) so he is quite adept at the guitar. I keep up with him and we're just playing some Saves the day or whatnot and he also starts singing ... completly on key and in rhythm, and I get pissed at this because I cant sing and play worth two cents. I asked him how long he's had to practice to sing and play, and he said Ive always been able to sing and play guitar ... its just that easy for him. WEll I almost threw a hissy fit at this ... its not FAIR! Anyway, my roommate Liz (playing piano for like 10 years) then asked him if he's ever played piano, which he responded yes, when he was little. SHe then said how that was probably why he had no trouble singing and playing, beause Piano teaches both halves of your brains to work independently of each other, as in one hand can do one motion and the other one can do a completely different motion( or in this case, one half of the brain controls strumming and fret poisition while the other half can concentrate on singing), both things acting independntly of each other. She did this crazy shit where her left hand was moving in huge clockwise circles while her right hand was moving in small counterclockwise circles and then she switched directions in both hands, one at a time, without even any trouble! SHe then also put one hand moving in a counterclockwise circle while the other one was moving in a clockwise circle, and when I tried doing that, I performed HORRIBLY! DAMN YOU BRAIN! WORK INDEPENDENTLY! DAH!!!

SO anyway, alot of people have been having trouble with singing and playing ... yet for a couple of days, I've been trying to do some of those independnece motions that Liz did ... and I almost think its helped me singing a little bit, I can now actually "talk" while I am playing and not mess up my rhythm too much. What do you guys think of this? I think its fuckin cool! Piano rules!

I mean I know that after a while, you can learn those motions by muscle memory and completely bypass any brain thought, but I dunno ...

Damn people who play piano and can sing and dance. Damn them all to hell and then poop on them. Jk

Anywho, discuss :P What do you guys think?

my sister is an asskicking piano player, and i notice that too, all the time, each hand is acting as if it's part of a seperate body. the singing thing will come though...one day it clicks and you will be able to "do" it (crappy like) and then you improve from there.

Yup. And also don't forget your strumming hand. It's really a third thing to concentrate on. So you have vocals, fret hand, and strum hand, and it takes time to get them to work together. I have to imagine that singing while playing the piano is similar.

Singing while playing the piano is much more difficult than singing while playing guitar if you're actually playing anything worthwhile on the keys.

I was going to get into playing, and I was playing on my mom's synth. I got Let It Be down, but I just didn't have a passion for playing it. I could sing and play it, I guess since I know the song like the back of my hand. Also, for anyone who can play like Tori Amos and sing, I will bow to you, lol.

the strumming hand was the hardest thing for my to get. usually my fret hand does what it is supposed to without effort, like it is dancing to the songs....my strumming hand...not so much dancing....

Yeah I really had to work and singing/playing too but now it comes pretty easily. Its really true about both halves of your brain working independently. It's weird how I can really focus on my singing (which REALLY needs it) while playing guitar is virtually on auto-pilot. Of course some of that comes from insane amounts of repitition. Good thread topic!

I can also pat my head and rub my belly....

 you still missed one. wtf is probablem?

aaanyway, to make a measly attempt at contributing to the thread, singing and playing came pretty easily for me. dunno how, just did. i think the hardest thing was to get over singing along with the chord in a horrid monotone...or chord switches. i remember when an A-E switch was hard...or bar chords. all the olden days..
