Damn I wish I could play lead

This is the place to talk about guitar playing not done by Dave! Topics about techniques, styles, theory, and other guitarists go here.

Damn I wish I could play lead

Unread post by jsgksu » Mon Oct 06, 2003 10:33 pm

So Ive been lookin at these Tim Reynolds fills and I wanna learn how to play them real bad, but Im way to slow. I look at them like "I could play that" then I listen to the song and Im like, oh yeah, hes fast as hell, nevermind. So Im lookin at Ants Marching right now and Im wondering if I should just keep trying it over and over till I get it and then try new ones or what. I seem like I just cant really play it and I also tend to be kinda sloppy when going for individual notes, Im not always straight up and down on just that string, I kinda barre a little I guess sometimes. Ive been playing for two years or so and can play the vast majority of Daves songs fairly well I like to think and other music as well. I think Im pretty good at rhythm and gettin better at fingerpicking, Ive just never ventured into learning lead, can anyone give me some tips, Id love to be able to play some lead and I feel like in the past few months Ive really hit a wall in guitar playing and this could probably really give me some chance for improvement and open up new worlds. Thanks guys.

playing other people's lead licks can be tough, but there is one tip i can give you: in order to learn stuff like tim's fills, just play them over and over, starting at a slow pace and then gradually working your way up to the correct tempo[/list]

They dont really sound right when played slow, at least I cant sound them out as easily. I guess I should just practice gettin my fingers able to go fast and hit the right notes with this exercise thing I have but its so boring. Any songs you guys know that maybe I would be familair with that would be easier to learn slow and work up to or any other tips would be sweet, thanks.

they aren't supposed to sound right when you play it slow, you do it slow just to get in under your fingers

Ya, I am by no means a good guitarist, but when I want to learn something new. I always play at a real low tempo over and over till I have the song memorized, then play at regular speed.

To start my lead stuff, I learned your basic pentatonic scales and just started picking stuff up on my own. When you're first starting out, it's pretty easy to play along to a lot of songs with those scales, and then when you start getting better and you start looking at other peoples' solos again, you'll see what they're doing, it'll make more sense, and you'll be able to start doing it better. Just my method.

By the way, whats the deal with the last part where hes on the 29th fret, what the hell guitar has that many frets?

You can use the slide up that high, but there aren't any frets. Just slide closer and closer to the bridge...it's pretty cool. http://www.guitartricks.com/2000/scales.php?input=scale There's a site with some scales...I'm kinda busy at the moment with the calc to really check it out for you. But IM me sometime if those don't help and I can tab them out for you and help you out.

i found a lot of stuff out by playing different voicings first. like moving that D shape up. like xxx787 is a G chord. then moving the G shape up. like xxx558 is a C Chord. then you start being able to pluck out scale degrees from this. like in G, you know you can play xxx788 or xxx7810 etc. and next thing you know it you have so many chords up there that its all you can do to not be playing a solo. and while i don't bust out a lot of solos yet, i know how to play fills cuz of this.
