buying the same instrument that a famous artist uses?

i really wouldn't let it bother me that much... but what's the big deal anyway? for example, if you bought the same guitar that dave uses why would people say "you only want that guitar because dave matthews plays it"

what do you guys think?

i think it is and it isnt.... since we all have some kind of dave matthews disorder, i think the style of play that we all develop will lend itself more easily to a guitar that captures that- i mean, if we're trying to play songs like dave, why not make it sound as much like him as possible? On the other hand, you should never buy a guitar that you dont feel comfortable with, and what feels right to you when you try it is way more important than whoever wlse hhas it.

1) use what you like for the reasons you like
2) Don't give a shit about other people's negative opinions if they conflict with your self-interests

Either you'll make a mistake and buy the wrong instrument - so you "waste" some money - you'll learn from it if you made that mistake. It'll play itself out.

Unless dave started endorsing squier stratocasters I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy any "decent" guitar dave's ever played/is playing.

i think the problem is buying a guitar having not played one just because someone plays it... you should try it.. if you cant, try what you can and see what you like out of that..

I don't see a problem with it at all...it's not YOUR money to spend, and if someone wants to buy a Chet or a 914 or Baritone Electric, it's their money, and they'll spend it how the want. It's also their life, and if they want to copy Dave, that's their inalienable right.

I have no problem if you purchase an instrument that your favorite musician uses, as long as you purchase it because you really want the instrument. I think buying one of Dave's guitars just because Dave plays them is a little silly, though, as you could very well be able to find an instrument that you think sounds better and fits your needs more closely. Buy an instrument because you like it and because it's the one you want, not because someone else has it...

i totally agree. the reason i asked was that i plan on buying a dolphin sn from warwick, because i've played them at guitar center and i love the feel and tone of the bass. but it also happens to be the bass that stefan used to use, and i didn't want my friends or family to think i'm blowing tons of cash just to use the same bass as stefan, know what i mean? don't get me wrong, its all about the bass itself, not who uses it, but the fact that stefan did use it, and i'm such a big fan of his, is kind of a perk.
