open tuning...

Unread post by gcom007 » Mon Dec 02, 2002 9:14 pm

I've never really played with open tuning until yesterday...I was just dinking around and started tooling with the tuning on my electric and wound up in open D...well, I've almost got a new song done...it's different...that's for sure...anyone else mess with this stuff much?

yeah, I've tinkered with DADGAD tuning which is pretty cool. do you know much of Stan Rogers stuff? some of the best songs out there, in my opinion. you must know of him - he's Canadian. Anyway, he has a lot of songs in DADGAD that are great. I found an old Stan Rogers song book so that's when I frigged around with it.

Open D - is that DADF#AD Joni Mitchell played in open tunings such as this.
good, and you?

for DADGAD they're pretty simple - the basic ones anyway. It's a great sounding tuning.

D: (0)-5-0-2-0-0
G: (5)-2-0-0-0-0
A: x-0-2-0-0-2
Em: 2-2-2-0-0-0 :?
F: 3-3-0-0-0-0 some kind of F, anyway :?

I think if you fool around enough you'll figure out how to get around in it. It has such a rich sound to play these open chords, since with the D and A notes resonating together with each other so well - overtunes and such.
good, and you?

I mess with open tunings all the time, and many times half come up with my own. Anyway, one of my favorites is EAEBEB. I get some sweet sounds out of that. Open tunings kick major butt.

Open G is fun to play with.

from low to high

Jeff Buckley used this tunning for some great songs (Last Goodbye). It sounds so full. Great for fucking around with a slide too. :)

Try EAEEBE- all those E's go crazy with resonance. simple fingerings are

E - 020000 or E/G# - 420000
A2 - x00000 or 500000 or A - x00020
B4 - x22000
C#m - 044000
F# - 250000
G# - 4x0400
D - x55200 :?

and you can play all sorts or trills on the high e at 2 4 5
--------------------------

Also try flipping a Keyser capo backwards and only covering the 3 4 and 5 strings when in regular tuning. it simulates DADGAD at capo 2 but you can still play all bar chords and riffs up on the neck.

I also really like just a simple EAEGBE. It's great for doing all sorts of parallel octave runs on the A and G strings while letting the rest ring open, and it's also really nice for lots of "Lover Lay Down" type chords.

Also, I have a capo that I've mutilated (hacksaw-style) so that it only covers the 5-4-3 strings as grock mentions and really have fun with that. I use that for "Sorry Love" and play both behind and in front of the capo to get some cool effects.

dashboard confessional uses quite a few songs that have a tuning that goes like this:

Db
Ab
Gb
Db
Ab
Db

this is one of the coolest tuning ive heard, ands its only a little different from the open D
