Vocal range...

Unread post by JaDaRu » Mon Aug 25, 2003 1:19 pm

Is it possible to extend one's vocal range? If so, how?

its really hard to say, i started out as a tenor, moved to baritone, then down to bass 2, but i can still hit all the notes, so im not really sure

Does this make any sense? So I'm singing "Do, re, mi" to my computer guitar tuner....so should I be shooting to move up a step every time I change words? Example: From Do to Re, should I be shooting from going from a B to a C#? Or does none of this make sense? I'm just trying to figure out where I stand singingwise and trying to gain some control over my voice

it makes sense, granted i dont really remember what my actual range is, but yes, i believe you have it right by moving from a C to a C#

JaDa, it is possible to change the reflective tones of your voice...with practice, and by that i mean a lot of it....this may break a few panes of glass, strangle a few cats in the process, but if you record yourself now and then a year from now by just all out practicing everytime you play...you'll definitely see a difference. That's what i do to measure my improvement....every August i record a CD with a bunch of different songs on it (covers mostly) and i examine where i can improve for my next year...and it's pretty much the time and dedication you put in...however, some people who are not blessed with great vocals to begin with may take a little longer to improve...the key is learning how to 'control' your voice in accordance with your capabilities and the music you play...if that doesn't make sense, sorry to confuse you but i'm running out the door right now....good luck though!

Yes you can extend your vocal range... but like tjmac66pc said, it takes alot of practice...and by that I mean "structured" practice...and at the same time you need to be very careful not to damage your vocal chords in the process (which can happen). Of course there are physical limits and not everyone can acheive a 5 octive vocal range like Maria Carey can.

One thing that is a reality is that "if you don't use it, you loose it" meaning if you keep singing in a narrow vocal range, at some point it will become very difficult to extend that range...and the older you get the harder it becomes (your vocal chords are less flexible the older you get...unless you work at it). So it is to your advantage to sing to the full range extent that you can...while not abusing your vocal chords.

How do I know this? I pay mucho $$$$ each month to my daughter's voice teacher....and that is what she told me.

How do I practice this though? I appreciate the information, but I'm also looking for some practical things I can do to improve (other than just trying to sing songs better)

the way I practied is just I sang and sang. Just keep doing it, the more you do it, the more your vocal chords will get used to the movement, the tendernes, and the stretching will begin. It's like guitar, do this do that, and you just start to get the hang of it, and if you can't go that fast, you eventualy will with just playing over time. You just gotta keep going. And yes it is possible to extend you range. No one wants to hear how well I sung 4 years ago, lol, people would tell me to shut up when I would sing to myself in the hallways. I listened to old stuff when I took up guitar, and I wanted to shoot myself I was so bad, lol!

lol. yep. the best thing about persistence when it comes to guitar and singing is that you almost always improve, and that's the beauty of it. just keep at it and keep trying, and it'll reward you in the end. :)

oh, and welcome to the boards Ranting Thespian!
