Lesson in humility
Lesson in humility
I've been playing guitar for about two years now. My main motivation was Dave Matthews. I've learned almost every song he has to offer, so I thought I was a pretty good guitar player. I recently sat down to jam with the cousin of a friend of mine (15, been playing for a year). Needless to say it was very humbling experience. He has received lessons for his entire guitar sojurn. His command of the fretboard was amazing, he had been just doing scale exersices. He never really listened much to Dave so I thought i might show a few of the more difficult tunes, WWYS, Stone, Satallite. He picked up WWYS in the two minutes it took to show him.
At the risk of seeming long winded (too late), does anyone know any good exersices that will give me a good knowledege of my instrument? Gcom, you mentioned four note voicings could you elaborate a little?

that's the most narrowminded statement I've seen on these boards by far.superman0710 wrote:lessons make the difference my friend

When you are actually taught lessons more emphasis is placed on this kind of stuff, but i don't take lessons, you could learn a lot from books about guitar thats how i know what i know about that kinda stuff.

Lessons make no difference what so ever....maybe so you know the basics but, look at tim reynolds...dave
some of the worlds best guitarists are self trained...Jimmy Hendrix Dave Gilmoure man come on
"superman". And Dbernard, Just try learning the basic scales, buy a book it will do u well...no one with talent in thier hearts needs lessons just a little guidance along the way...just practice more and dont try to measure up to other people cuz youll get there someday as well,
Good luck and peace

no it's not
suppose you have 2 people who are equally determined to learn guitar, one buys books and teaches himself, the other has an instructor and takes lessons weekly
you tell me who will develop more rapidly........
case in point, my friend had been playing guitar for FOUR years ( self-taught ) after one year of taking lessons every week i had surpassed him in speed, technique, and fretboard knowledge ( theory )
so to rephrase: With the right state of mind, lessons make all the difference

i've taken lessons for the past 5 years, going on 6. search my name, download some of my songs and you tell me how my creativity isDead Dawg wrote:hows the creativity level between the two of you?
Self taught seem to have much more creativity
once you learn all the rules ( and it's a lot easier when they're taught to you ) you can break them and creativity excells

how could you possibly argue the point? LESSONS ARE BETTER ( when taught by a competant accredited individual and absorbed by a willing individual )
what you're saying is the equivalent of saying that someone who goes to school learns the same as someone who teaches themselves for the same amount of time........
um no, just like schools, most music lessons revolve around a given curriculum and most music instructors have degrees in colleges in music study and can maximize learning time with minimal effort....

I can't believe this is being argued...
If you think that there's something wrong with learning as much as you can about an instrument and becoming yourself through the process, i think theres something wrong with you. Just my opinion tho.

so you don't become "yourself" with lessons? how does that work???6StringSamurai wrote:I can't believe this is being argued...

i don't know what kind of lessons you may think of, but i love my music school. i learn the music I want to learn and am never pressured to do otherwise. Music lessons are used to orient students in a given direction ( given their musical preference ) You can certainly learn on your own, guitar books and what. But someone who learns theory HAS THE EDGE ( it's not an arguable point ) they know why what is happening, they know where they can go from certain points without thinking..
...yeah, dave may have never taken a guitar lesson in his life, but that doesn't mean he didn't learn theory
and remember, he has AT LEAST 2 Classically trained musicians on his squad........you hear a lot of people saying dave can't solo.....guess why... ( that's right, if anything it would be because of a lack of theory )

No no no, thats exactly what im saying, as you grow in the process ( of lessons) you develop your own style, which you can later convey through your own creativity and style. I also agree with what you say about guitar theory, thats exactly why Timmy is so good, he knows what you call the theory.
