Singing help

Hey everyone....here's my question

I have recently started to sing along w/ the songs I play (crash into me, where are you going, etc...) but I have a range problem. My voice is fairly high and when I sing the beginning of "Crash into Me" verse at my normal speaking pitch, its too low to sustain by the end of the verse. If I try to sing higher at the beginning, it sounds abnormal.

If anyone would have any singing exercises/tips that I could use to increase my range or just improve my voice, I'd appreciate it.

you may break a few panes of glass or 'strangle a few cats' along the way...but on your own, you just gotta practice practice...i know that's dull advice, but really there's nothing else you can do... as a 'blue collar' singer like myself, not wanting to buy singing lessons, you gotta find a comfortable base tone, and then learn to expand your upwards and downward ranges from that...of course the more you learn to sing from the 'pit' of your stomach, the better you'll find your range...it's different for everyone though, just find a comfortable tone and work with that...it takes time

of course, knowing if you are singing on key helps too...

Absolutely. i had this same problem and one of my friends gave me the best advice ive ever followed. And ill let you figure it out for yourself.

Just kidding, no he said to sing stuff you can't sing. In your car, put in the song that's just too high for you and sing it again and again until you can get it. Belt it out, but not in your throat, just like tj said, sing from your stomach and its gonna sound bad when you start. But after awhile, you'll get it.

yup. quick question...do you guys have any tips for moving into a falsetto without making it sound...well, crappy? besides practicing.

isaac, it's basically impossible for anyone here to answer that question...everybody's vocals are so different in pitch, tone, and range that to try and give you advice/tips would just be bull$hitting you... my best advice for you to learn the high pitch (falsetto) type songs is to try and learn howie day's style of singing...his style of singing incorporates a lot of falsetto...even if you don't like him, try to learn how to reflect your vocals like he does....it's really hard to start off, and not sound crappy...i've been singing now for about a year and a half and you definitely notice changes in your ability if you practice practice (i know you didn't wanna hear that

I have on more question though....everyone says that you have to sing from your stomach/lungs and not from your throat, but I honestly can't tell the difference. How do I know if I'm singing correctly?

Disregard my last question, I just figured it out. I sorta just take a deep breath out as I sing...and what a difference! I actually sound half decent. Thanks to everyone

make those dinosaur sounds like in jurassic park...when the guy is trying to get the attention of those big dinosaurs...do that weird noise starting low and just go real high. I'm not even joking...my choir instructor in high school who is also a vocal teacher told me this when I asked him and I confirmed it in my sight singing and ear training class last semester with my instructor in there.
