Bar Chord Using 1st and 4th Fingers???

Unread post by sgr » Sun Nov 17, 2002 10:02 pm

For Bar chords where the root bass note is on the A string, Dave bars the bass fret with his 1st finger and the other notes with his 4th like this:

E:-1-- <---1
B:-3-- <---4
G:-3-- <---4
D:-3-- <---4
A:-1-- <---1
E:----

Having not seen any of the videos, I'm having trouble visualizing
this one. How do you get the 4th finger to do this partial bar
without screwing up the high E-string?

Very carefully....

If you want, you can play it like this:

E:-1-- <---1
B:-3-- <---4
G:-3-- <---3
D:-3-- <---2
A:-1-- <---1
E:----

That's usually how I do it.

yeah this a tad nutty if you ask me. Maybe on a Taylor with extra light strings I could do it. I find this way is the easiest for me:

E:-1-- <---1
B:-3-- <---3
G:-3-- <---3
D:-3-- <---3
A:-1-- <---1
E:----

but the high e string tends to get muted. no biggie though. my guitar is quite bassy (a bit boomy too) so the bass notes often over power the trebles anyway.

peace,
Ken

I don't think it's really possible honestly, either use different fingers for each string or use the 3rd finger and forget about the high e...that's the proper way to play it anyways...who knows, the other way could cause unnecessary pain...keep in mind that everything that dave does is hardly the right way of doing it and if you push things too hard, you could hurt yourself. this is coming from experience of someone who's been through emg's thanks to all the funky chords that I play...gotta love nerve problems...

I agree, gotta love nerve problems :) and also agree about the fact that what Dave does isn't always favorable. He did have a problem with Carpul Tunnel (sp?) syndrome. You can hurt your hand if your not careful. you got to draw the line somewhere.

indeed, that's why I had my EMG because they were sure I was developing carpel tunnels syndrome from my playing, you seriously have to be careful because that is serious business right there, to take it lightly is not the best idea.

well, I just did the pinky thing and played the open e fine, however, it was uncomfortable, and as I've learned from the two 3 dr's I talked to about it, if it's uncomfortable, that's not good. therefore I will stick to my index and ring fingers to do that job...

makes sense to me. you don't see that chord (that form) used to much anyway with Dave or anyone else.

it's quite common in jazz however the form X3545X or X3535X are more common

exactly, it's like that eminem song "Role Model" "I've been with 10 women who have HIV, hey kids, don't you wanna grow up to be just like me?!"

and the dave version, I type literally with a cramped pinky and tingling in my wrist from playing it... "I play barre chords with my pinky, don't ya wanna get carpel tunnels just like me?!"

actually I had a weird pain in my hand the other day - I think it after playing Captain. It's gone now, but it always bothers me when I get little pains in my knuckles and that. I don't want carpel tunnel :!:
