Help with my topic.

For my research writing class, our next paper is designed to have us track a certain consumer product and describe how it has changed over three generations. Overall I was thinking about my topic being electric guitar and referencing its changes to the different types of music that were popular at the time. i.e. Jazz, Big band, Rock and Roll. The main focus of the paper is to discuss why these changes were made and how they better served the consumer. Before I start any work on this topic though I wanted some advice from guitar players/enthusiasts. Does anyone have any advice on what else I can write about? Any help would be appreciated.
