what's good for cleaning electric guitars? Is there anything I might find around the house I could use?

I've heard lemon oil is pretty good for cleaning guitars, gets the job done on the fretboard, etc. There's also stuff you can buy in a bottle that's only a few bucks. I'd ask your local music shop what they recommend, though.

yeah the lemon oil is great, after you use it on the fretboard, it plays like butter!

yeah, its the worst thing to use. The citric acid in lemon oil eats away at whatever wood or finish you put it on. terrrible idea.

just buy some stuff at your local guitar shop. I would assume windex is not chemically ebrassive at all, but i would really recomend buying something specifically for guitars. typically it is pretty cheap. i think the martin guitar cleaner i bought was $6.

Is all of this the same advice you guys would give for an acoustic guitar? I have both but I don't really know what to clean the body of my guitar with. It's a pretty cheap guitar, but I dont want to ruin any of the finish (its black).

I dont understand why companies like fender would sell guitar 'care' kits that contained bottles of lemon oil if it was harmful to a guitars finish. I dont know for sure, so Im not saying you are wrong, but It would be nice to have a reliable source to get to the bottom of it...

We had this lemon oil argument a while ago and I remember someone verified that lemon oil was detrimental to a guitar

At one point someone told me that olive oil was good to use. I'm curious if it has the same effect as lemon oil. Can anyone verify?

i dont see why someone wouldnt buy a reputable gutiar care kit rahter than gamble with stupid household ideas.

a bottle of olive oil is $6. a Bottle of guitar care lotion/cleaner from martin is $6.

why use olive oil?

I didn't know lemon oil was so bad for your guitar. I haven't used it to clean my guitar in years since I've bought some Ernie Ball guitar cleaner stuff. You learn something new everyday.

I meant cleaning the body of electric guitars... I just wanted something to get the smudges off of it because I was taking a picture of it :D

i would just use windex then. if its just once and you just need to remove smudges.

that sounds best for an electric, that or the gibson cleaning kit.
