Has anyone taken guitar lessons???

The reason i ask is: I was at a guitar stor and a couple of guys came in they played dave... one guy was unreal... he mentioned this site as said it was real accurate, although he played most songs differently... he learned by ear, a lot of stuff had different chords sounded the same to me, played the stone and neon perfect... anyways long story short, they said that they just started taking lessons now as in four years into their playing and strongly advised me to take lessons...
have people here taken lessons? what have been the results? Did you get better faster? Did you look for a dave specific teacher? Looking for some input

I've been playing for 4 for good years and I could definately use some lessons. I've never had any, but learned on my own and from friends and family that could play. I know a minimal amount of theory and I believe that's holding me back a bit. I can play most of Dave's songs pretty well but not much else. I'd like to take some lessons a part from Dave Matthews type stuff - learn some theory and scales, modes all that jazz (pardon the pun) I learn songs by ear with the great help of tabs, and can figure what the chord names are. But I feel like I'm lacking something, or missing out on some good techniques or skills. Maybe its just me but I don't think so. Good thread topic, by the way.

i've never taken any sort of lessons but that's mainly because i was really turned off to learning how to read music from a number of music teachers that actually just strait quit on me. i've never been able to understand music notes and shit like that. i don't know about learning from a teacher but i definetely own a large amount of guitar scales and modes books, also appregios. they will expand your ability to move all over the neck. a really good book that has like every scale, mode, and appregio in it is called "the guitar grimore" its a black paperback book that looks like a warlocks spell book. i recommend getting the grimore if you want to understand scales and stuff.

I've been playing for almost three years now and I took lessons for about 3 months when i first started off to get some basic stuff down (chords, easy songs, scales)...after a while tho, you should try some music theory and there's a lot you can learn on your own but getting a teacher that knows what he's doin can help you a lot...my next step is to take voice lessons so I can sing well, i can sing and play right now to a lot of songs, i just sound like shit

My friend told me how to hold a pick and this guy once showed me a better way to play a D chord (both of which were VERY good tips) and other than that I haven't had lessons. I've been playing a little over a year and I say I do pretty good, but lessons wouldn't hurt a bit. I'm probably gonna take a guitar course next semester at the university.

I think I know quite a bit, I know most of the chords and scales and all that stuff, I just need to work on being accurate and being quick about it, which really can't be taught anyways. But like I said, lessons would probably make me a million times better.
