tips on playing and singing?

anyone have any tips for me? I've been playing (if you can call it that) for 5 months now, and want to start adding vocals to a few dave songs, ie, Cry Freedom, IBYU, Halloween and such..will it eventually just happen, or is there a way I can learn faster?

it just happens. other than practice a lot, i dont think there i sany way to speed it along. just don't get discouraged. i've been playing for...8 months, and it clicked last week. good luck. 8)

Yeah practice is the only thing that works , it can take time to adjust your mind and hands to do the auto function as many people call it , the tune will run automatically without you worrying about it , and then you can focus on the lyrics

just practice until you can play the song with your eyes closed..then find the lyrics and sing through those till you know them real well. then bring the two together. everyone here is right though, it takes awhile.

Or..... write your own stuff. It doesn't have to be stellar. Just come up with a riff, and start singing. At least this way you can get into the mode of singing and playing at the same time. When I first started, I didn't learn to sing and play other peoples music. I learned to sing and play my own stuff. Being able to play other stuff comes naturally after that.

i am to he point where i can say the words and kinda sing along with Dave's riffs. i think chord songs and stuff like that has helped cuz it is pretty easy to sing neil young or bob dylan.

Im starting to be able to sing and play to a lot of songs but my voice isnt that good. Today though I put in my new 10/24/02 DVD and put it on Crush, busted out my Fender Champion 110 Amp and a mic and put it so it picked up my guitar and my voice especially and cranked up the DVD. I played along with it and must admit I sounded better to myself, I think the key thing was being able to hear my voice at the time I was singing coming from an outside source, not just hearing it through my head. It was much easier to adjust things to make it sound better as opposed to recording it and listening to it over afterwards. When you can sing along with it and hear whats wrong and try to fix it, its much easier. Im still not good enough at all to let people hear it, but I think Im on to something as far as being able to improve. Try doing what I did if youre having trouble and see if it helps.

Ironically, I just recently (last night) tried to sing to Stay or Leave, and I found that, for the first time ever, I could do it. I duno, maybe its the song, but it worked. It is certainly hard at first, for the past 3 months I have tried singing to various songs while playing...keep practicing, it will come to you!

For a long time the minute I opened my mouth to sing my right hand would freeze. I still have a really hard time playing and singing but I have to admit that I don't practice at it as often as I should.

The best advice I have read from these boards (if you haven't already done a search) is to start out by humming along with the song while you are playing. This alone really helped me. Once you can hum really good while playing, progress into singing only partial phrases of the lyrics...eventually you will get there. But the humming tip really helped me make that leap.

hey whats up everybody not really new to the site but i am new to the board I have been playing with the guidance of dmbtabs.com for about 5 months and I gotta say I have come so much farther than the last time I tried to pick up guitar about 2 years prior. anyway in reference to the question of practicing singing while playing. I made up this little idea on my own last week when the same question came to me "when am I gunna be able to sing and play?" well what I do and what has seemed to help me as odd as it sounds is to mute your TV and sit down in front of it and put on the TV guide channel. Then while you are playing a song that you are good at try and read all of the programs as the screen scrolls through the channels. I started doing it in my head and then eventually tried to read them outloud with out breaking the rythem of whatever i was playing. I personally started with the intro to dancing nancies b/c it came very easy to me and it was one of the first ones that i learned. start with an easy song and once it becomes automatic for you to play the guitar and you gain the ability to read all the titles of the movies then try to start singing. hope this helps good luck ,
