I JAMMED LAST NIGHT FOR FOUR HOURS WITH JIM WHITAKER

Unread post by mangold » Sat Aug 05, 2006 6:24 pm

I was on the appalachia service project last week in west virginia, kind of like a habitat for humanity kind of thing. They have a culture night for each week, and ours was on wednesday night and it was Jim Whitaker, a Nashville recording artist, playong for us solo. He was not bad, I had heard his name before but couldnt think of where. He did some pretty impressive bluegrass style fingerpickin' but not much else.

He was a really nice guy though and he was walking around the center after he finished that night and he happened to come across myself, my buddy Sam who also plays guitar, and about 10 of us from my workgroup having a little jam session sing along thing, which is what we did every night. He introduced himself and complimented our playing and we talked for awhile. Then one of my friends from my workgroup told me and sam to play phunkdified for Jim, and even though Sam didnt know the tapping section we did and he liked it alot. He said that he was busy until Friday night but he would come back on Friday around 10:30 and he asked us to play with him. We of course said yes.

He showed up friday at 10:30 and we sat there with him and maybe 10 or 15 observers and played until 2:30 in the morning in the courtyard of our center. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. This guy has been in the music business for so long and he blew me away not only with the different styles he could play and sing, but also with the stories he told. He knew every beetles song from when he was a kid, he knew every eagles song from his college days, hes played with Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels, the Allman Brothers, and a whole slew of other people I can't even remember. Anyways we played for 4 hours, we talked about guitar, songwriting, how to make it in the music business, everything. It was so amazing and has inspired me more than I could ever express in words.

Just thought I'd let you all know.
