Worth it to get a twelve string?

Worth it to get a twelve string?

Unread post by schollz51 » Tue May 20, 2003 3:18 pm

Well my 15th birthday is coming up on Friday and my mom told me that she would buy me any thing that has to do with guitars under $300. I do have an Ibanez acoustic that i really enjoy playing. But anyway i was thinking of getting a cheap 12 string at Daddy's Junky Music (for those of you that are not familiar it is a music shop that sells music type stuff). So the one that i was looking at was $190. Is it worth it to get and play? Or should save up and buy a better one later?
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

I recently played a 12 string for the first time, and it is amazing what they sound like. Although, the one I played was a Martin, I'm sure most of them sound good. I love them, they are so comfortable to play.

I can't believe that we would lie in our graves wondering if we had spent our living days well, and I can't believe that we would lie in our graves dreaming of things that we might have been...

Well, go play it... if you like the tone and are satisfied with it, buy it!

I actually like my 12 string more than any of my other guitars. It is a Yamaha that I bought in downtown Seattle for $250. It has lower action and sounds incredible. It is a good way to improve fingerpicking. I played some Taylors and Martin 12 strings for comparison. Obviously, they are better, but I can't afford to spend that much. IMO for my skill level, I can't really tell the difference. I would start with a cheaper 12 string, like what you mentioned, and go from there.

I actually owned a 355 for about six months but I had to sell it. Ever since I've been longing for another twelve string. I would take cash and then save up the rest for a decent one. I wouldn't spend less than $500 and you can get a 355 for around $800. Seagull is another good brand but Taylor has notoriously good t.s. Seems like a lot but it's important to get a quality one because of the intonation problems. Tuning one in the first place is headache enough.
