Muting trouble

Unread post by JaDaRu » Sun May 18, 2003 5:32 pm

I kinda understand the idea of muting, but in practice I'm clueless. What exactly is muting, how do I do it, and what should it sound like? Sorry for the beginner's question, but that's what I am..

Thanks

Jason

Muting is the act of touching a string but not pressing it down to the fretboard so that it deadens the sound so the string cannot be heard. Would you like to give an example of a song or chord your trying to play that needs mutes so we could tell you how play it?

I was told that if I use a pick, I need to mute the strings.....I pretty much have no clue what that means and/or how to do that

No I think youre right, maybe in the chorus you have to mute so that you dont hit the othe strings but thats it, for the verse you certainly dont. Did the person that told you if you use a pic youd have to mute but if you dont you dont have to? I dont understand that very much.

if youre a beginner i wouldnt recommend satellite for you to learn... but i dont do any muting. i simply hit the string im supposed to hit. i never learned the chorus because i really dont like that song and i just wanted to learn the verse for good practice.

if you want a song to stretch out your hand learn tripping billies and crazy. satellite is more for speed.

Try "Too Much" , that song ought to teach you some muting. It will also help you learn rhythym without actually playing notes, so you can count your mutes instead of actually notes being played. Honestly, just playing that F# power chord and muting will get you there. Enjoy.
