On jmtabs.com is says he is strumming with a pick. On the song it sound like a mix of plucking and strumming. Whats going on here?

Room for squares... Its at the beginning at is starts of with what sounds like thumping and plucking...

I think it's a pick. You have to mute with your right hand at the correct time though to get the stop, start like strumming.

Yes, it is definitly used with a pick. I have the live version at Austin City Limits and he is just hitting the strings with the palm of his right hand.
