help with a dumb question?

i know this sounds extremely dumb for some of you, but i do not know the answer to this.

I know for guitar tabs the number is which fret and you use the 6 bars as for which string to play (hope that makes sense. like this:

-----2 (fret 2 on smallest string)--------
--------------------------------------------
----------------------6 (fret 6)------------
--------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------

i can play tabs like that fine. but what happens when there is a number (i assume this is a fret number?) in a space below the strings? what is that played on? like this (its from digging a ditch):

E:--------------
B:--------------
G:---0-------0--
D:---0-------0--
A:---x-----3-3--
E:-3-3----------
2 2 2 2

im sorry, i have never seen a tab like this before. sorry for the dumb question...but thanks for answers!

i seriously have never seen that before. then again, i normally dont rewad too many tabs on my own, my teacher does
