Lessons
Lessons
I took lessons for a few months, but found it hard to become motivated with the lessons since I was already past most of what I was learning. I'm interested in learning straight tabs, I don't care about theory and such, I played trumpet for 9 years im all theoried out. My instructor didn't really have much of a personality and towards the end I actually dreaded going, did I just have a bad experience? and how can I find the best teacher for what I'd like to do?
p.s. If anybody knows good instructors near rochester ny I'd love to hear about them.

I have taken lessons for trumpet, voice, and guitar, and I've loved each lesson. You need to let the teacher know exactly what you want to learn...you can't expect them to magically figure out what you're interested in.
If you're simply interested in learning straight tabbed songs, which by the way is not a good idea IMHO, then you don't need lessons.
hope that helps!

thanks,
I may have sounded a bit too set... It's not that I don't want to learn anything else, I do want to learn more chords to be able to improvise, but I don't want to be playing hot cross buns from a book, when I can already play crash, wonderwall, etc. just kinda felt like the guy wanted to start at the name of each string just to get more cash...

I never got much beyond basics taking lessons. For the past 5 years I just play, some tabs, some books, usually just getting a sound in my head, getting chords and make progressions. Basically just mess around until you start sounding goodpka wrote:thanks,

There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

I disagree 100%VoodooChile wrote:Your ability will get exponentially better when you stop "practicing" and just play!
Practice practice practice. I know playing that menial stuff from the book seems pointless, but trust me. As someone who has been playing guitar for well over a decade, you cannot skip over the basics, you will only have to backtrack later. Stick with the lessons and learn the dumb stuff, even if it isn't what you are interested in.
I was stuck on a plateau forever until I began exploring different genres and methods of playing. Don't take your instructor for granted. I wish I had time to take guitar lessons again. Hopefully this summer

I after 5 years of guitar lessons the biggest thing i found was that you always hit a wall at at certain stages, but if you keep persevering with the crap your teacher wants you to learn, because it is for a reason, you come out the other side a better player for it.
Evey Hammond: Who--who are you?
V: Who? Who is but the form following the function of what... and what I am is a man in a mask.
Evey Hammond: I can see that.
V: Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation, I'm merely remarking on the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.
