Advice from classic style players

Unread post by dmb_josh » Thu Mar 02, 2006 6:56 pm

Hi guys, I am taking a student on starting tomorrow who wants to learn classic(al) style guitar, but I have little experience in that realm and wanted to get some thoughts.

In my own (limited) experience finger picking, I have not been consistent with specific fingers to specific strings. I tend to under-utilize the pinky in almost everything I play (which isn't much) finger style, but I am under the impression that a proper form includes using certain fingers almost exclusively on specific strings.

Any ideas, comments, suggestions or overall advice on the topic as well as finger picking/classic guitar playing in general are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

E- ring
B- middle
G- index
D- thumb
A- thumb
E- thumb

The biggest thing is dexerity, and a good way to build this is to never rest your fingers on the pickguard, guitar body, etc. Never, NEVER give up when you feel discouraged. Classical guitar can and will fustrate you and discourage you but it pays off very well.

Thank you! It seems like the pinky doesn't get involved much.. is that typical?

As far as strumming goes (say open chords), would you recommend using the thumb by itself or a downward strum using the backs of the fingers?

Pinky generally doesn't get involved.

As far as strumming, it really goes for what kinda sound is trying to be acheived. I believe the thumb is used and the back of fingers are used, really, to make a softer sound.

Yes, something to sound more like a harp [that instrument that is played while seating, greek thingy, appeared in harry potter I] (sp??). More harmonic.

Or something more strong and powerful.

Classic training is by far the best training to improve the dexterity of the hands, their speed and individuality. Hard as hell i reckon.
