So just wanted to see what you guys lean towards regarding songwriting...what do you tend to develop first; the riffs/chord progressions or lyrics?? A bit of both?? Always one sided?
I have a few developed songs that have absolutely no lyrics...I think my problem is basically that I have nothign to say

at least not in this point in my life.
I just got to wondering because more than any other musician IMO, Dave has elements in his songs that are meant to sync with lyircs (ie. granny, #40)....writing songs like this with no lyrics in mind would be odd...like your just breaking the rhythm. So yeah, just curious...

My "gitter" was my best investment

i have a few different original guitar parts, actually whole songs, that dont have lyrics yet. but i also have some poems written. so they may become those songs. it seems i am giong to be writing guitar parts first in the overall picture
I can't believe that we would lie in our graves wondering if we had spent our living days well, and I can't believe that we would lie in our graves dreaming of things that we might have been...

The music first. After that the melody comes. Then the Lyrics. I was never good at writting lyrics first and Music last.
Peace!!

i would venture to say most people do the music first. i often have lyrics written and eventually they end up in a song. but i have never written music to go along with a lyric.
and like how to learn a song is always to have the music and guitar part down so you don't even have to think about it. and then work on the words. so writing a song is a lot like that.
on a side note, i am gonna guess this is what Dave does too. that's why we see teases where he just plays the chords and how the lyrics to his songs change so much from the debut to the album (at least for the most part).
the other day i wrote a song about "my auntie" (said like on-tee). and it just works. i was playing music i had written last semester and i was mumbling through words to find a melody and boom i said something about my auntie and i love it. sometimes it just clicks with you.
(i only have one aunt and i haven't seen her in years. maybe i should give her a call...)
