I need open mic help

Im going to be playing at a new open mic next week for about 20 minutes. I need to make a real good impression so they will hire me back for regular gig nights. Anyways I need 20 minutes worth of songs. I dont know if i should do more covers or originals, probably a mixture but which ones.

i havent played live before but this is what i would think. the crowd is going to be impressed with probably two things--the complexity of the guitar playing and the emotion in the voice. you probably should play a song that looks difficult to an audience, i.e. for a dave song that could be tripping billies, so much to say, jimi thing...anything where your hand is jumping around the fret board alot. thats what i would do

I disagree...I think the crowd wont notice complexity, unless it has a total hook. People that dont play the guitar dont know that playing tripping billies is any harder than playing, say, run around by blues traveler. I would try and wow them with originals, but MAKE SURE you play several songs every now and then that they know and can sing along to, even if theyre not singing out loud. Emotion is a big deal though...I always have more fun listening if the guy looks like hes having fun playing...I'd try to play maybe a 70/30 mix of covers vs originals your first time. Just see how it goes.

i think anyone who has played guitar will know if what you are playing is really that hard but some people dont even pay attention to the guitar playing (which is nuts to me, cuz thats what i watch the whole time). i am thinking about doing some live stuff sometime so i think about this alot. i think the whole show should be like a movie w/ an intro, some humor, a serious part, and finally a climax. i really dig seriousness but some folks just wanna have a good time so start off w/ the fun stuff then when you have their attention from that, hit them w/ a solid original or a good emotional cover. then finally knock em dead w/ a screamer. your stuff has always sounded pretty good juineaux so it should be an awesome show. good lucky buddy.

I also agree with this post more than the other way around. I can play a two chord song and some of my friends or my parents think I am a guitar genius that should be playing to a sold out audiece of 10,000. Just mix it up but have sometype of reoccuring theme. I liked the idea about relating a show to a moive.

you're probably right. i also think the lyrics are important....hopefully the songs are somthing that the people can understand and relate to.

im gonna do at least a song or two that is fairly complex, because im gonna be playing to other musicians also, and most of all I want to impress the bartender/booker so that that I can get a more permanate gig. I imagine they will notice some amount of musicianship, but I will make sure to play a good sing along song too.
anyone have some more songs that would sound cool?

have you ever heard the song "change" by blind melon? that is such a good song. the guitar is very easy (just A, D and G chords, with some added notes) and the lyrics are awesome.
