Drumming

Unread post by TheGoop » Mon Apr 28, 2003 12:39 pm

Does anyone have advice on how to get a good drumming sounds out of the guitar? Like the type of stuff Howie Day does. I was wondering if there are certain areas of the guitar that are better or a better part of your hand. I've seen Howie play at my school and looked like he moved around to get different sounds. Thanks for any help

are you talking about basic percussive effects? you can just slap your hand down on the strings to knock them against the frets. i did it in my little original riff... http://www.angelfire.com/wa3/billywesto ... nal__1.mp3

I do it with the DL-4 all the time...fool around with knuckles and fingers, and even the butt of your hand on all parts of an acoustic...just fool around...

If you speak to anyone that can play a Djembe they'll tell you that you get different sounds out of it according to which part of the hand you hit it with.... for instance look at the inside of your palm, the 2 joints ( i dunno what they're called) and your knuckle will each give you a different tone...same goes for the base of your hand.
So I guess the same would go if you're bashing your guitar around...i've only ever seen Howie using the side of his fist, the fleshy part for bass and then fingers on the top for a snare sort of sound...

Hope that helps

for the snare/bass drum part, howie makes a loose fist and pounds his guitar on the bottom left quadrant (looking at the guitar). for the cymbal part he uses two fingers to slap on the opposite part of the guitar, near the preamp/eq. he usually has repeat turned on somewhat with his dl4.
