The only Taylor Ive ever played in that price range was the 2002 310CELtd. It was the nicest guitar Ive ever played and will be getting it as soon as I can scare up $1100.

Are you talking straight up 414 with no cutaway or 414ce with cutaway and electronics?
IMO it's in every guitarists best interest to be sure to buy a guitar with electronics, especially if you're aspiring to play live. With Taylor's Fishman pickups you can be sure you'll have quality that you can count on. As far as value goes... I have yet to find anything comparable to Taylor in that price range. The other big boys of the game (Martin, Gibson, etc.) seem to have a way heftier price tag on guitars that offer similar options.
As far as shopping for a guitar goes my advice is to play 'em ALL. Play every guitar you can get your hands on in every store. Even though it may seem like torture to pick up a several thousand dollar instrument that you just can't take home,.... it will give you an understanding of what makes those guitars worth what they are and you'll feel how it compares to your drug of choice. I even went so far as to pick up some of the Squier and Vega acoustics in my local shops... now I know exactly what I don't want and why I don't want them. Get a feel for what you like and narrow it down like that.... good luck and have fun while searching.... One day you'll walk into a shop and pull down a guitar and it'll hit you like a ray of sunshine.... You'll just know that THAT guitar was meant for you.

Best of luck :)

my sugggestion to buying a guitar is to get one WITHOUT electronics and then in the future (1-2 yrs) spending the 2-300 dollars to put a piezo/mic combo pickup in. you will never find a piezo/mic pickup system in a factory guitar. they just don't do that and it is so nice to have an internal mic. and when you look at what musicians play, they all have full bodied guitars that they put their own electronics in. plus you can buy a much better guitar with a lot more to it. one that sounds better without the electronics. i don't skimp on the guitar in favor of electronics. electonics should always be an addition to an already good guitar. then when you want to play it live you'll have a upper middle to high end quality guitar that you can be proud of.

First of all.... You're right grock,... there's nothing like a piezo/mic combo when it comes to reproducing pure acoustic sound... BUT... They do come stock in factory guitars.
Fishman's Prefix Onboard Blender system (stock on many Taylor and Martin electronic-equipped guitars) is a Piezo/Mic combo with ample controls including a mic to pickup blend slider (to combine the two devices) as well as a phase selector switch (invaluable when performing live to kill feedback).
If you do want to buy without electronics,... it's much harder to install a system with the kind of controls that the Prefix has because you'd have to hack a huge square in the side of your guitar. The alternative is to have the controls in a separate box that clips on your strap or sits on the floor; neither one is nearly as conveniently accessed. A factory installed unit WILL be properly installed due to the high standards these companies adhere to. FURTHER it will be covered by the manufacturer's WARRANTY meaning that, depending on your warranty's specifics, you won't have to pay to fix it if there is a problem.

Again,... electronics or not, take the time to find the guitar that's meant for you and you will not regret it. Good things are worth waiting for.

BTW (as I'm sure most of you know) Dave plays a factory Taylor 714ce (as well as many other Taylors with the Prefix system) for many of his shows and I certainly don't hear anything wrong with his sound. :)

oh well i am big enough to admit when i am wrong. i didn't know they came on the martins and such. that changes my mind about that huh. yeah so if you got the money then go for that. sounds like a good deal. i'm gonna check it out when i got to get my next guitar. if you have a luthier put the unit in it would be covered by warranty too i think. and get one with a preamp on the body of the guitar. the conenience is well worth it.

Well, that's what he played the last couple of tours. Current indications are that we might be seeing a change *crosses fingers*

Also, he used a DM3MD for the D+T tour.

I have a 414ce. It's cool, but if had to do it all over again, I would have saved up some more money for better wood.

I have another acoustic, a Larrive D-09. I prefer playing that one.

Buying a guitar just depends on what feels good to your hands and what sounds good to you.

Also, a good tip is to have someone play the guitar you want in front of you. That way you'll get an audience perspective on the guitar.

Have fun!
