how can i go about getting the E into C without a tuner?

Play your 9th fret on your low E string, and tune it to match your open A string.

To tune the low E string down to C, play it open it until it matches the A string, third fret(C). 5fret G string also is C. Play both to get a stronger sound.

Eh I just tune it down untill it matches my D string... But I've got a pretty decent ear.

For drop C I just hit the C note on the B string, it's the first fret, and match the E string to that. Again I've got a decent ear so I can get it pretty close.

You are correct. I think it is easier and quicker to tune the low E down til it matches open D string. Or 5 fret on A string.
