the way i do it altho im pretty positive this is the wrong way is when im playing i tap my foot. i kinda just naturally do this while i play to keep the rythym (sp) goin and if i want to kno the time i just count how many times i tap my foot. im wrong sometimes but usually im really close i think anyways.l

first off... there is no 4/5 lol.
x/y: x is the number of beats per measure, y is the duration (2 = half, 4 = quarter, 8 = 8ths)
the easiest way is to decide whether its a simple measure or not...
see if its 1 2 1 2 1 2 or 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3.

i'm not following yet.
so the second number is going to be how many total counts. So if i am listening i start counting like it's a dance routine and count, 1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8.
so the second number can only be 2, 4, and 8. but 2 would not be very common cause that would mean there is a change every couple seconds.
but how are you counting beats on a guitar???? I have friends who DJ and I can count beats when they are spinning records, buit counting on a guitar seems weird to me.
and how does it relate to the strumming pattern?
thanks,.
