hey there. i was just messing around on the ole GEEtar this morning and i noticed a general trend in my playing. i use some dave chords and play around w/ other creative chording and i was wondering about style. have you guys figured out your playing style. i mean have you kinda found YOUR sound and are growing on the guitar in that direction? ive been playing for 2 years now so im kinda out of the beginner stage but im not a master by any means. im not sure if my playing is a rut or my style. i dunno. any other wise comments to this babbling would be enjoyed. you are all welcome to talk about yourself and your prefered sound etc.

This is a good post. I am totally influenced by dave - whenever I (attempt to) write an original there are always one or two "dave" chords in there, or if its not a chord dave has played yet it easily could be. I like the sound. Now my rooommate, who is a SICK lead player, learned mostly through classic rock songs. He's awesome with the scales, but his originals are boring (at least I think so) becuase they consist of nothing but barre chords, with maybe a 7th or something here or there. On the whole though, I wouldnt say I had a style yet. I still just mimic right now. But unless something changes, I can sorta see where its going.

the biggest thing I got from playing Dave stuff is his percussive style. that shows more in my playing than perhaps his chording style. John Mayer is also turning out to quite an influence in my playing. I think I'm starting to have my own style I guess, but its a mixture of different influences as is everyone's style I guess. I playing a lot without a pick lately and I'm liking it more and more all the time. its that thumb slap and picking technique that John Mayer and others use. I love it, I love how it sounds and I love playing that way.
good, and you?

I definitely enjoy the percussive aspect of the guitar. Dave and Jack Johnson are my two favorite guitarists right now. And probably my two favorite lyricists. Jack for speaking the simple truths and Dave for his love of the females.

You gotta love the percusive sound. I'm fully adicted to percusive guitar (probably should've been a bass player). I started with playing losts of Ani Difranco, and then moved on to Dave. Ani is also very percusive, however, i got sick of retuing all the time. I just started listening to John M. I didn't relize he sings the "your body is a wonderland" song that is becoming played out. But Neon....blew me away. I couldn't believe it was the same guy.
