Oustide of Dave

Unread post by dmbjimmy » Sun Mar 16, 2003 2:01 am

Hey guys-

I'm a big DMB fan, just like you:) I'm not a real big fan of John Mayer. One critic wrote something along the lines of:

"Mayer needs to spend more time working on his lyrics and less time trying to sound like dave matthews."

Anyway, the point. What other guitarists influence your playing. I love the unplugged Alice in Chains and Nirvana in NY. If you guys see those tab books at your local guitar store, buy'em.

So as for me: Jerry Cantrell, Dave Matthews, Kurt Cobain, SRV, Jimmi Hendrix, and bob dylan just to name a few...

Ya know... I know Dave was a huge influence on Mayer... but I think Mayer has blossomed into his own self.... He took his influence but he's still him... He's unique... its just people to closed minded to look at new artist.... like when dmb came out.. im sure alot of people were like what is this crap.... but ya know I think mayer can prove the critics wrong with one word... Grammy.

Plenty of shitty musicians get grammys. They dont mean a thing. Hell, didnt the space between get one? Oh, and right next to Mayer, winning best song by a group, was the opus we all know as "Hey Baby" by No Doubt. Point made.

I agree with the first part, but also there are very good musicians who win grammys. grammy's do mean something, but I'm not exactly sure what that is. :? the grammys are like the Pop music awards. Norah Jones is an excellent musician, and she deserved all those grammys.

ok, I thought I had a point.....I guess not. what are we talking about anyway?

oh yeah, John Mayer (suprise surpise) I'm a big fan, but I'm much more of a DMB fan of course. however, John is an amazing guitar player and song writer. he's got a touch with lyrics, and I'm not sure If I'm the only one who sees that. he'll come in to his own. the world will accept him one of these days. :)
good, and you?

When John Mayer won a Grammy I lost a lot of faith in the music industry. True, Mayer does have some talent - he really can play a guitar and not ALL of his songs are bad. However, for the most part I really get tired of the poppy lyrics in most of his songs and the under-singing even more so. His voice just kind of drones on and doesn't really do anything. It certainly wasn't anything worth a Grammy in my opinion. I'm fairly certain he'll be forgotten by the time he attempts his next album if he ever gets over himself to work on one....what an ego.

But then someone like Norah Jones goes and wins 8 Grammys and it makes it obvious that the world still has some sense. That's another summer concert I won't be missing - 6.19.03 in Atlanta!

Yeah I mean mayer pretty much just started his career... give him time to bloom... I was thinking back to this interview I saw about him... It was talking about people like Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton are praising him saying hes the breath of freshair that music need lately. Ya know if guitar gods like you who the fuck are critics thinking that they know what the hell they are doing... cuz from alot of reviews I've read alot of critics can be dumbasses.

as for the actual topic of this thread, my main influences in guitar playing have been dave, david gilmour, and mark knopfler.

Dispatch

Unread post by StickyMU » Sun Mar 16, 2003 4:18 pm

Not sure how many people have heard of them, although hopefully some people here listen to them. Dispatch is a great group and all three of the guys play guitar at different times. They have influenced me alot more lyrically, however, than they have with my guitar playing. Still, they take really basic chords and make it sound like something you've never heard before. Kind of like Dave does, so check them out if you get a chance.

Ok ok I just have to say something about John Mayer. I thought Dave rip-off for the longest time, but just check out he's DVD. Holly shit the guy can play, and totally different then Dave's style!! If you listen to his album you don't really hear what kind of guitar player he is, and thats where the DVD comes in, and as for his ego listen to the DVD commentary that he does, I didn't hear an ego at all. Give him a chance, watch him play.
As for this topic I started playing the guitar because of Dave so he's my influence.

surprisingly, i have learned a lot of guitar style from john fruciante (not that i can mimick him) and even tom morello of rage against the machine. dave is definitely my biggest influence as far as acoustic, but in guitar style, these guys have contributed.
I can't believe that we would lie in our graves wondering if we had spent our living days well, and I can't believe that we would lie in our graves dreaming of things that we might have been...

James Taylor and Clapton were my early influences and still two of my greatest I think, along with Dave.

And about Mayer, while the lyric content might be shallow, the quality of the lyrics are much harder to debate. He has some great stuff, paints vivid pictures, uses his words well. It's fine if you want to talk about all of his lyrics being shallow (I disagree with that, too), but criticizing the lyrics in terms of their poetic value is way off base, IMO. And for those who say that Mayer rips off Dave, if he rips off anyone, it's SRV. He's got his own style. There's a huge difference between influence and rip off, and Mayer is all about the influence. He was also very deserving of the grammy, although I would have liked it to have gone to Taylor instead. But his music is VERY solid and VERY intelligent, and he IS a breath of fresh air because not only does he play this great music, he writes it too. It's the thing to do to say that Mayer rips off Dave Matthews, but I think that if one takes a good look at his music, you'll see that isn't the case.

Well I'll be goddamned.

A relatively rational John Mayer thread. I didn't know such things could possibly exist.

*watches Babe take off from the pen*

///off-topic

Anyways, as far as influences, it's mainly just Dave. He's the reason I started playing, and most of the songs I know are his.

I don't apologize for it; sure, it's limiting and narrow-sighted, but I'm not a fucking guitar talent, and I'm not gonna be playing gigs.

I'll probably break out of my shell one day; if so, I'll let y'all know. ;)

Nicely said about Mayer.
And I totally forgot James Taylor, he is a lyrical master. And his guitar is simple and complex. Although I’m on the fence about October Road, two or three of the songs are great but there’s not enough good songs on the album. What do you guys think?
