how do you know what scales go with what chords?

This is the place to talk about guitar playing not done by Dave! Topics about techniques, styles, theory, and other guitarists go here.

well 1. best thing is to learn theory, then youll know keys... all scales will work with all chords BUT not all scales will work with all chords if they are different keys, theory will teach you what position to play the scale in to get it in key with whatever chords you need....

that being said, another route it going here...

ok...so if im playing c, d, g in a song and want to solo over it i have to use a scale in the key of c when playing c then switch to a scale in d when i change and so on? is that understandable?

no, you see, C, D and G are all in the same key, so its the key of C since C is the first note.

that is horrible.

im assuming you meant C D G as chords right?

yeah. thats Gmaj. youd use the Gmaj scale to solo over that. you could use different modes if you wanted to, but thats a bit advanced.

generally speaking, most classical music always started on the tonic, or the first note/chord of the key. that doesnt happen today though. todays music has no rules like where to start, how to progress back to the tonic, etc..

Well C D and G as your major chords still means the key of G, because its always the first fourth and fifth note that is major. Since C and D are right after eachother, you can assume they are the fourth and fifth note in comparison to G, which is one. Anybody want to better explain this for him?

Nicely explained. Simplest chord progression that 90% of rock songs are created from. I IV V progression. Say you want a C I IV V progression:
C#: C# F# G#
C: C F G
Cb: Cb Fb Gb
Bb: Bb Eb F
B: B E F#
B#: B# E# Fx
Ab: Ab Db Eb
A: A D E
A#:A# D# E#(F)
Gb:Gb Cb Db
G: G C D
G#: G# C# D#
Fb: Fb Bbb Cb
F: F Bb C
F#:F# B C#
Eb: Eb Ab Bb
E: E A B
E#: E# A# B#
Db: Db Gb Ab
D: D G A
D#: D# G# A#

Those are I IV V chord progressions. It's easy to create songs using that patter, and usually they are pretty catchy. Sorry if I got some wrong, I feel as if I did, but I'm tired and i have to wake up in 2 hours for school
