okay. i desperately want to learn this song. this is one of the most desirable acoustic playing styles ive ever seen and i would very much like to work it into my own style. to be honest, i wasnt even aware you could successfully play slap on an acoustic. heres where im at right now:
Section 1: the slap part after the muted intro.
i suspect that the tab ( http://www.mxtabs.net/tabview.php?zip=1 ... ivee+Video ) is incorrect in this section and i may make my own. specifically it seems like they're missing some notes inbetween the pops and quite a few at the part right before the opening repeats. (the 3rd slapped open on low D on the first line of the tab) however, assuming this tab is accurate, i can play this part almost perfectly (a little slow), but only if i play it all slap or all pop because i need to rest my hand on the pickguard to get any decent slap sound out of it, so when i bring my index finger up to pop, i lose the slap. im just looking for comments and help with my slap/pop technique, a bassist would probably be most helpful.
Section 2: the strumming section
i can do this perfectly... with a pick. but i cannot strum anywhere near that speed barehand, it just sounds like im beating my guitar with a wet noodle. (and it hurtz mah fingahs) is there a specific way to do this barehand, he does it over the fretboard, but when i do i smack my hand on the side of said fretboard. i cannot do the right hand slide in this part in this at all, it is esentially very controlled tapping (as we will ascertain in a few moments i am not capable of) how many fingers do you guys use when you play this? he uses three, but when i do i just get them all jumbled together and the make nothing even similar to the sound he makes, they just make a mean scratching sound. any help here is appriciated.
Section 3: the tapping section
i cannot do it, i cannot get a sound out of my guitar when tapping (especially on the high strings) anybody out there (again, most likely a bassist) that can do this well please help. if i can learn this section, the slide tap in the strumming section would follow soon after. im in the lithospre on this one.
Section 4: the uber strumming section
this will resolve itself when i can play it without a pick, otherwise its easy.
Any help you can give me is appreciated! this is all im workin on right now, and i dont have much of a choice seeing as my only acous. is in DADGAD!
Thanks in advance!

ok man, i can kind of play it decently, been working on it for around a year now, still dont have it close, but its recognizable. here are some tips :
as for the slap bass line part of phunkdified, i dont really go by a tab, theres too many nuances to accuratley represent it in tab... i would recommend downloading the actual video file of the larrivee phunkdified jam and slowing it down with a pacemaker, that way you can hear every little note he's playing, especially in the bass riffs. the hardest part of this song for me is getting the souped up bass line sounding right, the one right after the pop where he just slaps like a maniac for about 5 seconds.
for the strumming section, JK uses a flamenco strumming technique of triplets. basically what he does is he does a downstroke with his ring and little finger (not pinky) and then a downstroke with the thumb, followed by an upstroke with the thumb, all executed in a triplet beat. its very challenging to get down ... i would recommend at first not even using a guitar, just trying to get the technique down using a table edge or something ...
the slapping section of this part, where he hammers on to the 3rd fret of the A string and does the little 5th to 7th fret slide and then the harmonic slap takes practice as well ... btw, he only uses two fingers to tap, not three. he uses just his index and middle fingers ... i can barely tap with two, let alone three.
as for the tapping, it takes a LOT of practice to get the volume and melodies to all come out just right. practice doing tedious exercises of the tapping, up and down the fretboard, until you can get it to sound right. it takes some finger strength and considerable callus buildup on the rigth hand as well..
hope this helps ... the basic message im getting across is just PRACTICE very slowly, for hours on end, and then slowly VERY slowly speed it up.
it will come, just be patient

Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking. Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away. Forget about the guilty, we are innocent instead, for soon we shall all find our lives swept away.
You're in over your head on this one. You gotta learn how to crawl before you can leap tall buildings. Trying to learn this without a good foundation will result in frustration and bad technique. At least practice it slowly for a good while before you start speeding it up.
I still think you should start easier or you're gonna hurt yourself.

well i figure i can make it as easy as anything out there by slowing it down to a manageable speed. what is an example of something easier in the same style? point me to it!MWR wrote:You're in over your head on this one. thanks man that helps.... btw, where on the fret do you tap? ive heard that ur supposed to do it inbetween the fret like a regular note and ive been told to do it ontop of the fret cause its louder... does he really do the strumming section tap with just his mid-finger on AD? thats nutscgalves wrote:ok man, i can kind of play it decently, been working on it for around a year now, still dont have it close, but its recognizable. here are some tips :

Ummmm... there's a few Tim Reynolds songs. Like Jamez Rolling Waves. This is besides the point because you don't even know the basics of fingerpicking. I know for a fact you're not going to listen to me so I'm not going to bother. Have fun jumping into the deep and drowning.praisedave wrote:well i figure i can make it as easy as anything out there by slowing it down to a manageable speed. what is an example of something easier in the same style? point me to it!MWR wrote:You're in over your head on this one. Jamez Rolling Waves is a ton easier than that justin king song. I can play Jamez Rolling Waves pretty good(when my thumb heals up from a blister from fingerpicking a lot) and can't even come anywhere close to even trying to play that songpraisedave wrote:and i did look up Jamez Rolling Waves, although i dont think its too much easier...MWR wrote:See I told you!

i dont mean full speed, obviously the king song is harder then, i mean im not even capable of tapping, i dont know how. so any song with it will be hard. im not even that interested in learning the tapping part of the song, i just wanna get the slap pop down to an art.DMBFan63 wrote:Jamez Rolling Waves is a ton easier than that justin king song.
