burning strumming finger (no pic)

i played for longer than usual yesterday and i did a bunch of fast strumming. i play like im holding a pic. at about 8 last night my finger started burning and it really hurts when i try to play. any ideas?

it's called a rash or something like that

it's like getting your fingers used to fretting the guitar... keep killin em and eventually they strongin them selves

my finger never really bothers me....if you dont you should grow that fingernail out just a bit, it helps

yeah, i never cut the nails on that hand and they get worn down so bad i've actually started bleeding while i was playing...
needless to say, i try to carry a pick for when that happens

Instead of strumming with my fingernails, I strum with the side of my fingers. As a result, my thumb and index fingers on my right hand have turned into one large callus, but I love the sound it makes. Its much easier to slap-mute the strings when your fingers already lie on them. You don't get the volume you get playing with your nails, but just like always, the more you practice the better you'll get with it.

As for the burning, IGNORE IT AND KEEP PLAYING!!

Which leads me into the bleeding.... one time my index finger was a little not-as-callused because I hadnt played for a while. I sat down to play a buncha songs when all of a sudden my finger felt funny. I looked down and saw the red on my strings.

I was playing Halloween at the time, so instead of stopping I just started pounding harder and harder and singing more and more pissed off. The song ended, and only then did I realize how much pain was shooting through my finger. I wiped the splatter off the body of the guitar (there wasnt much), then played something soft to quiet me down (Lover Lay Down I think) and then let my finger clot up.

It hasn't happened since, thankfully.

(Afterthought: Sure, most of you may find that disturbing or disgusting or whatever, but I *loved* it.)
(Afterthought 2: I hope I havent swayed you to use a pick all the time. If you don't want to bleed then don't be dumb like me and keep playing with an open wound on your strummin finger!)

I bled on my guitar before, too. But I stopped when I noticed. I knew that if I wanted to play again soon, the sooner I stopped, the sooner my fingers would heal, and the sooner I could play pain free.
