playing guitar in jazz band..

Unread post by captainp4 » Sat Sep 25, 2004 3:47 pm

so yea.. i'm playing guitar in my school's jazz band this year and i the teacher handed out the sheet music and got a blank stare from me..

i know how to count, i know basic theory .. i played trumpet for 5 years so i know how to read music and such..

but i don't know the names of all the chords on the guitar.. i was wondering if there is a program that i could type the chords into and get a tab version of the sheet music that i have..

i know, i'll never learn this way, but i need to be able to play while i'm there and i want to learn the right way eventually, but i just don't have the time right now, so ... any help would be appreciated.

thanks,
paul

i play bass and guitar in jazz bamd, we are handed out chord charts (obivously the music for bass). But yeah, you can get one of those posters with a lot of chords (most of them that you use in jazz band0 and put it up on the wall in the room.

im actually surprised that they didn't give out chord charts

None of the players in my schools jazz band know how to read at all!

I'll be the only one.

rhythm in jazz is awesome..i didnt know a thing when i first started but once you learn the basic chord structures you'll be fine..if you're serious about it get a mel bay book-if im remember that right-and remember jazz is a whole different field. avoid barre chords. its pretty easy, just build up the chord-root, third, seventh (no fifths) will get you through big band. and get a 'real book' for building up experience.

or you could ACTUALLY learn how to construct these chords so you won't have to memorize a bunch of common voicings that EVERYONE uses
