Singing

Unread post by two_stepper10 » Tue Sep 14, 2004 7:32 pm

Today I decided to start singing, something I've never really done before expect back in like Middle School many years ago when I was in choir. So decided to start learning Crash b/c I can play that blindfolded and decided it'd be the best way to start. Wow, alls I can say is I have a newfound respect for singing. There is alot more to it, like the way to breath with Crash because he'll sing some of the lines continously that you really have to have alot of air for. But it was still pretty sweet. Anyways though what are some tips some of you have as far as singing goes while playing?

Knowing the lyrics forwards and backwards is very important. When you have the lyrics down cold make note of where you should take breaths. Then add your own vocal stylings to the song and voila!

Ok cool thanks! Yeah that makes alot of sense b/c I know I sang it about 7 or so times and was trying to figure that out but I'll just work on memorizing the lyrics first then working with breaths.

Make sure you dont strain to sound like Dave. I have a big problem that I try to get as high as dave gets on some songs and i squeak. Stay in your vocal range. And sing from your diaphragm, something i only recently learned how to control. You get this tingly feeling in your stomach if your doing it right. Otherwise you will probably not sound as good as you really are and your vocals wont sound very full.

I almost forgot: RECORD YOURSELF. It's the only way to really now if your doing it right. It's for reference so you don't need some elaborate recording set up. A simple tape recorder would do.

Is there a way to record myself with my computer? I have a mic built into my laptop and its pretty good. Any programs that I should have that I can record myself with?

The windows recorder should work (limited to 60 secs though).

When you inhale, don't expand your chest. Expand your stomach, you have more control that way.
A perfect example of what not to do is Boyd when he sings. Watch how he raises his shoulders as he breathes in. That is very wrong, dont do it. You should be completely relaxed, dont tense anything.

Babies have good breathing technique, we just pick up bad habits.
If you get a chance, watch a baby lying on its back. Watch how it's stomach goes up and down. That's how you should be breathing. Once you get that down you wont have any problems with breath control.

I'm so glad my parents forced me into choir. Singing is easy for me. Maynard Keenan's songs, especially APC, are fun as hell.
Stay with me, safe and ignorant.

Is the Windows Recorder just a program packaged with XP that I already have?
