Self-taught or lessons?

Unread post by scottwagen » Mon Jul 19, 2004 4:11 am

Hey everyone,

I was just sitting here at work and I decided to start a new thread....so, just out of curiosity how many of you are self-taught and how many of you have or are taking lessons? Also how long has everyone played for?

Thanks, oh and I'll start it off by saying that I took lessons for about 2mos. and couldn't learn all the serious theory stuff, it felt too much like homework and not enough like playing. I should go back and take lessons but not yet. And I've been playing for 11 or so years now.

I took lessons from a Jazz guitarist for about 6 months. The dude really helped me a lot with theory and general understanding of music. But as far as improving my playing, I've done better on my own. It's hard to find a teacher thats in tune with what you want to learn. Lessons are a good thing but you need to spend time finding a teacher thats right for you.

Self taught by Jimi Hendrix!

No really, I learned from a guy who knew him.

Okay, really I know a guy who sounds like Henrdix.

Oh forget it, I suck and I am self-taught.

Both, my teach got mad because i didn't want to play Ode to Joy in Whole notes so i quit and taught myself. I took a class at school too, but all i did was pass off a few songs then play stairway to heaven the rest of the time.
