String Stretching ?

Unread post by DSeibel » Wed Jul 14, 2004 2:36 pm

Guys

Thanks for all of your advice on strings this morning...I will definately experiment with them...however the guy I normally deal with at the music shop almost forced the Martin SP's on me...so I'm gonna try them. He suggested something to me that I've never heard.....once I've strung the guitar and tuned it, he told me to grab the strings at the lower fretboard and 'stretch' them....then retune...and then repeat once more. He says this will get most of the potential stretch out of them and reduce the need to retune as they stretch.

Anyone hear of this ?

hey there,

this is something you should definitely do. it shortens the time span needed for the string to stretch on it's own through playing....which also means less retuning in the beginning.

yes, my first post on this baords was talking about strings, about tuning and stuff.

I recommended stretching. I stretch my strings a lot, it helps keep it tune, and make it a bit easier for some reason

It's not stretching as much as it is tightening the string at both the bridge and tuning peg so that there's less play and therefore it stays in tune longer.

But yes, that is a good idea. I also recommend finding some light cotton gloves to use to restring just to keep oils from your hand off the string :)

Use elixirs, then you dont have to worry about hand oil.

Funny...I just changed strings, and this is definitely an important thing. My guitar goes noticeably less out of tune after stretching.
