If we're talking "impressive", and not going strictly by talent, I'd have to consider U2. Particularly b/c of thier consistently good releases. THey've got more classics than a majority of the groups named.

On a side note......we've got to face it, Stefan is mediocre at best.

it seems to me that he's underrated. he's not in the top 10 most amazing bassists or anything, but i think he's better than people give him credit for /non-bassist so i may be way off

Jerry Garcia in any shape or form
Any band Trey Anastasio has shared the stage with.
Umphrey's just because they are so tight and technical.
SCI.
Widespread Panic pre 2002
Lately, I have been into the Duo. Those guys fucking rock.

EDIT: The Flecktones is a no-brainer

It's not out of disrespect for the guy. I've just been listening to him for over a decade now, and I've never been really impressed by anything he's added to the music. I'm not looking for flashy, off the wall shit like Claypool or Wooten. I'm just saying from a fan and musician's stand point, he's never eally done anything for me. Just my opinion though.

That's cool. But I think it is admirable that he can hold back and blend in so well, that should be the first and foremost goal of any bassist before they start to wank like Wooten or Claypool. I think that his ability to be sublte and blend in (Stefan's) is what makes him so great and admirable.

agreed. a better less subtle bassist would ruin dmb IMO

Too subjective.. Everyone measures talent differently then others..

Stefan is not mediocre, and I really feel that's not just an opinion.
