I think my post got buried in some stupid bickering.
I think Umphrey's harmonizing and guitar work is absolutley mind-blowing. However, I give Phish the upper hand because of sheer experience and age.
Yeah, I dunno if UM is better overall as a band, but guitar-wise they are far superious IMO. But they are two totally different bands, one has two guitars the other has one so its kind of like the age old "Mayer v. Matthews" debate.

A lot of bands were musically superior in there day. Bands like Floyd and the Beatles, while not incredibly amazing at their instruments, paved the way for bands to come, and I think they should be given credit where credit is due.

The most talented "band" that Ive heard is the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The creators of fusion, but all were trained musicians and made incredible music.

you are all crazy who think the most talented bands are the flecktones and phish.
I concur.

I don't think we're discussing "influential" bands. Strictly talented. And Mahavisnu's original drummer, Billy Cobham, could blow Carter out of the water. And we all know how fucking crazy John McLaughlin is.

I think they (the original line-up) were the most talented band of all time. John did a lot of work with Miles Davis, including Bitches Brew. The later formations of the band were incredible as well, but nothing touches the original.

i think dream theater is up there just because each one of them is crazy, but there also a great all around band. just listen to scenes from a memory and a change of seasons, those two cd's are in my top favorites.

also he isnt as good as like martie maguire from dixie chicks. on that line i think dixie chicks might be one of the most talented bands too, not just the 3 but there whole other band too, all of them except the bassist are awsome, the bassist pisses me off.

i think its important to ask whether we judge the "most talented band" as a group or as individuals playing together. for example dmb weve pretty much agreed isnt a super talented band in the context were talking, but they play great together. does the fact that they have so much chemistry raise their "talent" level as a group? if you put hendrix, clapton, jimmy page, wooten/jaco, and bonham(sp?)/rich together, sure they might have the most talent of any group of individuals, but their chemistry might not be so hot, so does that make them less talented than, say, phish who has talent but not the greatest, yet has great chemistry

i think he was just trying to say putting the most talented band together, like primus sucks they suck as a band but les, larry, and there drummer are great musicians individually.

well, in reference to the best band, DMB is def. in the top 10, that's hard list to compile

but as for guitarists....have y'all not seen tim reynolds play solo? he's insanely incredible and more importantly....unmatchable
there's no other guitarists like him, and he plays all kinds of styles, he's a stringed instrument god

if there was such a thing as the guitar olympics, tim would be bringing home the gold---no question

but we can't not give credit to some other greats like duane allman, warren haynes, jimmy page, eric clapton, etc.

I'm going to go with The Beatles...I think they drastically changed the landscape of music and pioneered everything that a band couldn't do before them.

You don't see that kind of talent today. Sure, you can talk about amazing guitarists, vocalists, drummers, bass players, whatever...but taken as a whole, I think The Beatles represent a true band and the "complete" package.

As far as DMB, yes they are extremely talented. But certainly not the greatest of all time...and FWIW and to add on to the prior debate, I would put Phish ahead of them. And The Doors. And The Dead. And The Rolling Stones. And The Eagles. And Floyd. And Zepplin. I'll even throw in the Trans-Siberian Orchestra for the fun of it. Ha!
