Oh, and one not looked at by most is Mark Knouphfler. He is from Dire Straits.
Mark Knouphfler is fuckin amazing, his solos are so melodic and expressive, IMO he's one of the best guitarists out there, and he fingerpicks all of his songs too. THe outro solo to Sultans of Swing and Tunnel of Love are amazing, check them out.
sultans of swing is my favorite rock and roll song ever

ELO Jeff Lynne? He is a pretty solid player. I dig ELO too. I told my friend that yesterday and he says, "Man ELO? Electric Light Orchestra? That's such bullshit. They might as well just call it PCP."

Plllleeeeeeeeaaaasssee tell me you're joking.
I'm not. He's undoubtedly a good guitarist, but I don't think he's really great, Kinda like Dave. He can write a great song, and knows his theory, but he can't really compare to guys like SRV, and Clapton. Besides, he doesn't just use one guitar, he uses quite a few guitars, a loop machine, drums, a bass, his mouth, and all that other stuff that you see on stage at his shows. Like I said, he uses just your average everyday chords and adds funky picking patterns and hammer on's (i.e. Its a plant, its just F and Gm, Best Feeling is just G#m, B, F#, and E, and Freeker by the Speaker isn't as hard as songs like R&R, the Stone, and SMTS) So Keller is definitely underrated, underapreciated, underpublicized, just not as a guitarist so much as an artist IMHO.
Leo Kottke is much better than Keller in terms of technical ability and style. And they're very close in style.

Charlie Hunter - jazz player who plays an 8-string guitar. Absolutely incredible. Definitely check his stuff out if you've never heard of him.

I'm pretty sure he's on every "Top guitarist" list in every music magazine of the last 10 years. That's not underrated.

Mark Knopfler's not underrated. He played with Clapton Stin and McCartney at a show for Monsterrat Island a phenominal show none the less. He also has a signiture Martin and on his solo cd he plays with James Taylor.

I'm thinking of his version of Watchtower/Halloween, SMTS, Slide by the GooGooDolls, Sex and Candy. That stuff!
