I see what you're saying, but there is nothing satisfying about that kind of music. The guy sucks at guitar, and people like that kind of music because it is mainstream. So if you want to make it as a mainstream artist, sure that's easy enough, but you'll probably end up hating what you do. I am talking about making as a guitarist in a more underground/"alternative" (I hate that word) scene.led_zep123 wrote:you are completely wrong here. there are so many bands now because it costs almost nothing to make a cd. so record labels are making shitloads. there were only good bands that recorded back in the vinyl days because vinyl was pressed. it would cost a ton more. so record labels only recorded good artists like the beatles and led zeppelin.DreaminBassMunky wrote:Making it in the music world, or at least being successful is so hard. Does anyone want to make it as a guitarist?

Go for it man. I started going to open mics just to watch & listen; after a while I realized that I was just as good or better than most of the performers, so I asked the best singer up there if he would sing w/ me at the next open mic. He said, "sure, why don't ya learn John Mayer's Love Song for no One?" The bastard picked a pretty hard song, but I learned it, & we kicked that songs ass the next open mic.JacknCoke wrote:....Me though, for the moment, would like to just get on an open mic and play...I just wish I knew if I am ready for that step or not...ah well
It's all about confidence, I don't have a big ego, but most of the time when I'm at open mic & listening to others play, in the back of my mind I'm thinking, 'I can do better than this guy'; it might not always be true, but it comes down to your confidence.
After playing many open mics, you start to get tired of the scene & tired of hearing the same damn songs played every week, that's when you make your next step, getting the balls to ask the bar owner/manager to book you a gig. Just last week me & a buddy went to a near-by city to check out an open mic; the guys who were running it were all phish-heads & it took them like 40 minutes to play 2 songs. We got up there & cranked out 5 songs in less than a half-hour, they (the regular open mic'ers) didn't give us a very warm reception, but as we were leaving the bar owner said he loved the music & offered us a Friday-night gig next month!!
So just do your thing, have confidence in your abilities, & most importantly....have fun.!

I agree that alot of bands are cookie cutter boy band types made to push their regulated music and image onto the poor younger teen. And I was thinking of this saturday night when I was watching a local jam band play. Their guitarist was great, very fast, very accurate guitar playing. There bass player was great and as a whole they played together well and had a good sound. But why will a very talented band such as this never make it out of the local bar seen? Songs. People may love your stuff when there drunk at a bar but driving down the road it's not going to fly. Song writting, and not just lyrics, I mean putting together all you instruments to create a sound that is someone unorthodox and appealing, is what it takes. That's why someone like Brittany Spears can produce hits. Because there's someone really good at writing pop songs working with her.
