Here's a clip of how I play neon - the bass notes could use a little more emphasis but I decided to take this recording :)

Well, I am slapping the bass notes with my thumb, like Mayer does I believe. I started out just slapping those 5 notes perfecting it, perfecting the rhythym and the overall sound of the slapping. After I got that down, I moved on to the higher notes, throwing those in even if I messed up. By the way, I use all of my fingers except my pinky to play it, I can get increased speed that way, but that's just preference.

stop trying to play just like mayer, the whole 16th note strum pattern isn't really necessary to play the song

It is really hard to explain, best advice is to just keep listening to it and playing it, maybe use a program to slow it down to half speed to get the notes right. It took awhile for it to click, and that's normal, it's not the easiest piece of music..

I rest my hand on the bridge usually and slap with the jointy-part of my thumb is. When you bend your thumb, you'll see the big crease, you want to hit with the hard bone on the side right there. In between the crease on top and on bottom. That usually gets the most sound. And only let that part of your thumb hit the string too.

where exactly are you hitting the string itself? i've figured out where to hit it with my thumb...just no clue where to hit the string.

I can hit any part of the string and get the same sound out of it..
again only let that part of your thumb hit the string to get the most definition out of it

Edit - have to head to work i'll talk more about it with ya later

this song is hard...can you post an mp3 of just the slapping you did to practice the rythm before you added the other notes...that may help me.
