Hey man.

First post...kinda awesome its about a christian topic.

I'm 17, and play worship in both my churches worship service, and at youth. I can sympathize...theres nothing more discouraging than looking out to see a bunch of blank faces. But Just keep goin at it. Personally, seeing how my youthgroup is, I've found that playing loud, upbeat songs first is a must...be as loud as possible.....sound like freaking chevelle or rage or something. Then, play softer stuff, but try not to switch moods to quickly. Overall, just pray about everything, and the lord will take over.

A sweet song we play currently is Your Love is Amazing

favorite song list:

Fall on me (you can medely with U2....so sweet)
Great is the lord (you can medely with Matt goods "Pledge of allegience"

Another thing....dont get caught up in the lines of secular and christian music....if a secular song has a sweet message...play it....we play "times like these" By foo fighters all the time.

This may not be the most common church song in the word, but none other than Let it Be kicks some serious ass on an organ or piano. I love free forming the solo on the spot.

Church music, especially the rock and roll kind, rules. Its the cheesey old fashioned music that is boring and generally sucks.

if you got a good organ player it can really rock. we do all sorts of jazzed up hymns at my church. i normally make a simple riff in the key and just watch out for those modulations. and our organist is a jazz organist so he is really good. there is a good message in those old songs.

and is it wrong forso many of us to be involved in christian music. i don't think so. maybe just surprised that church kids can be cool. obviously you can see us religious types aren't so bad huh? haha. i used to get labeled as "that church kid" but really we are pretty cool. just like everyone here.

Dear Lord this thread ROCKS!!!! I thought that basically fire and gcomm and me were the only ones around here doing this kind of thing. So good to hear so many others speaking up!

taylordb, I feel your frustration. I led worship for my youth group from when I was 12 until I went to Davidson, where I am presently, and when I first started out, it was painful. People were disengaged and could care less about what was happening; they just wanted to get out of the meeting and go get something to eat. And I personally really struggeld because I love worship and it's something that I know God has gifted me in and called me to, so what was I supposed to do? As a worship leader we're called to LEAD the people in to worship, and that involves taking them by the hand- even poking and prodding with love sometimes- and really being sensitive to them as well as the Spirit. But at the same time I myself wanted nothing more than to forget the folks who didn't care and just worship. But most people who lead worship find it much easier to worship, and as a leader you have to be careful that you don't run away from the crowd. In the end, what I think was most important for my group was the example that was set and the prayer that happened behind the scenes. I did worship honestly and transparently before them with the rest of the team, but didn't run off by myself, leaving them all staring at the ceiling, and as a whole the leadership team prayed that the kids would really learn how to worship and desire to worship. After a couple years things started turning around, and by the time I left, we had a group of kids that loved God and loved telling him about it. But it was a lengthy process that took years. Since I've been here at Davidson I've been a part of a similar thing. I was approached by the youth leader of a nearby Lutheran church to help out with the worship at their meetings. When I first started, kids could care less. It was a sing-a-long time, and a very uncool one at that. But again, by setting an example of worship, by being transparent up front, and by prayer, attitudes changed, and I was fortunate enough to see the seeds that were planted there bloom. So I'd just encourage you to stick at it, keep one foot in God's presence and the other in your kids' disconnected reality, and pray. God will do his thing.

And break these chains" because if that's the song I just wanted to say that it's one of my favorites and not enough people have heard it.

being a worship leader is not reacting to the congregation, but if you can truely enter into worship yourself, people listening (and when I am in the congregation, I see this too) tend to follow...at least the ones that will join in will do so...that has been my experience on both sides of leading, and following...

i think that leading worship by example is definately important. but also seeing how people react to the songs and how they feel the music is important. i am a pretty mellow worshipper. i never sing but on some times i will belt it out from the back of the band or really pound my guitar and lead others in that energy.
